. I was overcome with extreme nervousness; my stomach began to tie itself into knots. My next class would be maths, not my favourite subject but I was shaking with nerves and excitement. I don't have Sophia to talk to this time. To calm myself down I take notice of the beautiful scenery, everywhere there were huge oak trees, where students sat underneath talking and laughing with their friends. Behind the school gates, Lake Anderson (the lake my school was named after) stretched across, the water glimmering as the sun shines over it. The scenery calms my nerves down as I take a deep breath and admire the peaceful grounds of the school. I was so busy admiring the grounds I wasn't looking where I was going and I managed to trip and fall onto a kid in my class. I find myself on the ground with the cutest boy in the universe next to me so close our hands touch. Our eyes lock as he stares at me for a moment before he says
"Hi I'm Matt are you okay?"
I take a moment to realise he said something. Something about him was very distracting; it was either his straight, black hair or his intense green eyes like my favourite fictional character Percy Jackson. I realise I was staring at him so I stammer out.
"Hi I'm Charlie, I'm fine.... uh.... sorry for bumping into you. I'm the clumsiest person in the world"
"Hey, it's fine. I'll see you around Charlie"
And just like that he left leaving me with a fluttering feeling in my stomach, like thousands of butterflies trapped inside with no way to escape. I head over to the Maths classrooms. After Maths (which was awesome, we had this hilarious teacher called Mr Jeffery who was so cool, He didn't even give any homework) Sophia and I met up under an oak tree and exchanged stories about our classes. When it l told her about Matt she squealed and hugged me so tight I couldn't breathe.
After school Sophia and I went to get some ice cream at this cafe across the road from Lake Anderson High. The place was a cute rustic style place with timber tables and antique furniture it was also full of other students relaxing after school. We ordered two double choc sundaes and sit down. We started eating the delicious sundae when a blonde haired girl started walking towards us. Her hair was curly and she had it in a ponytail, her eyes were hazel coloured and looked beautiful but there was a look of irritation in them. The girls face was pretty and delicate like a fairy but her posture showed a sense of superiority. Her perfume smelled like cinnamon but not the cheap stuff you can get at Kmart, this smelled rich and exotic, it smelled expensive. The girl came towards us and introduced herself.
"Hi I'm Ashley, I'm here to talk about the fact that there have been some rumours that you were flirting with my boyfriend Matt. I forgive you since you obviously didn't know we were together."
My stomach tied itself into knots. Was what Ashley saying true? She must have seen the look on my face because she was admiring her perfect nails while saying
"The truth hurts doesn't it; if you know any better you will stay away from Matt. If I find you flirting with my boyfriend again you will regret it."
She then left, I wanted to curl up into a ball and cry. We took the bus home but neither one of us said anything. I kept thinking about what Ashley said, how could I feel so strongly about a person I talked to for about a minute and for someone who already has a girlfriend?
My second day at this high school was better than I expected, I still saw the different social classes throughout the school that I hadn't noticed before yesterday. Ashley and her popular clique always sat on a specific bench near the sports oval where the popular guys play soccer. That bench is strictly for the Populars, I saw Ashley wave at Matt and a lump formed in my throat. I quickly rushed to science before I do something embarrassing like cry. After science I was still feeling a little sad over the whole Matt and Ashley thing but told myself to suck it up because there is nothing I can do about it. I head over to one of the oak trees and sat down by myself, taking a look at the different social stereotypes around the school. You have the video game nerds always on their laptops playing video games, the popular girls on the bench, the popular guys on the boys soccer team, the genius kids who are better at maths than most teachers and finally my group of friends...... the Invisibles. I was so lost in thought I hadn't noticed that someone had sat next to me under the oak tree.
"Hey"
I turned my head in surprise and my eyes widen when I see who it is. I manage to choke out.
"Hey"
"Listen, I heard what Ashley said to you and I'm sorry. I should have been nicer to you"
"It's fine, don't worry about it"
"No it isn't. You did nothing wrong, I'm so sorry. Can we still be friends?"
I smiled at him.
"Yeah, I'd like that"
We spent the rest of recess talking and laughing. I talked about my favourite books and Matt talked about his favourite sports. He laughed when I told him that I thought he looked like Percy Jackson. I told him how I'm looking forward to the Olympics next year and how my parents and I watch the Olympics together while eating an extremely unhealthy amount of junk food.
"Seriously, Ashley hates sport and all she talks about is beauty and fashion."
He then put on a high pitch voice and tried to imitate Ashley.
"OMG I'm so pretty with my makeup and expensive clothes and I'm better than everyone else and oh Matt sweetie can you stop talking about those boring sports."
I laughed
"You shouldn't say that about your girlfriend"
"Can I tell you a secret?"
I nod.
"The only reason I'm dating Ashley is because everyone expects me to."
I almost choked on my recess.
