The Blind Ranger

Chapter 1

Two voices, almost exactly alike. My father's, of course. Ferris always has him. A youth, probably a bit older than me. And my older twin brother, Fennis. I never went anywhere without him.
"What is Halt wearing, again?" I whisper.
"An odd cloak. He's standing still, and his outline is indistinct."
"Wow."
"They're about to leave."
I could already hear their footsteps starting to leave the room.
"Halt, wait!" I run after him, hoping I don't trip and fall flat on my face.
"Yes?"
He stops as I catch up to him.
"Halt, I want to come with you. Please, everyone here treats me like I can't do anything."
He doesn't say anything for a moment. Then, just as I'm sure he'll say no, he agrees to let me come.
"I assume Fennis will be coming too?"
I shrug apologetically.
"I'll move faster that way."
Fennis had already come with me, so we grabbed a few things and went to the stables to grab our horses. We then followed Halt out of the castle and the life we had lived for fifteen years.
As Halt and Horace talked about Ferris and Dad, I took in the smells outside the castle. Mostly manure, really, but it was like the sweetest perfume after Ferris's court's sickeningly sweet smells. There also was chatter and bargaining, friendly teasing and the beginning of fights. I loved out here already.
"I can help you find an inn, if you like."
Fennis. Always willing to help.
"There's a good one at the bottom of the hill. Great meals."
He'd taken me to that one. Their cooking was better than the castle's.
Once we arrived, the innkeeper greeted us enthusiastically. Halt had mentioned something earlier about a few hour's sleep. After my sleep last night, that sounded wonderful.
