Most of the time I felt invisible. This wasn't one of those times.
As I walked down the middle of the sidewalk, people briefly glanced at me as they moved around me. My old worn shoes thudded as they hit the concrete. The wind whipped my black hair into a storm behind me. My backpack thumped against my back and my switchblade rubbed against my thigh from inside my pocket. The people around me swirled into a blur until I just saw a sea of faces floating past me. I had been in this town for a few months but nothing about it felt like home. Not the busy streets or quaint shops or even the forest. It didn't matter. I wasn't looking for a home.
My growling stomach signaled dinnertime so I steered myself into the homey diner. Thinking back on it I realize this is when things began to change.
