Chapter 19
Blue flailed a little bit during the morning, but caught several more successful whitewater rides. After an hour she was worn out but elated. She paddled back to where Maddy was sitting on his board, studying oncoming sets.
"Hey," she said as she approached his right side. Blue quickly arched her back like he had taught her to as an oncoming wave crashed between her board and body.
"Hey yourself. You tired yet?" Maddy asked, amused.
"A bit," she admitted.
"Good. You should be," he said, glancing over and grinning mischievously.
"How long do you usually stay out on the weekends?" Blue couldn't help but ask.
"I'm usually out for 2 or 3 hours, come in for a second breakfast with mum and dad, take a little rest then come back out for maybe 3, 4, 5 hours. With lunch in between, of course," he added, still grinning.
Good God! How did he do it? "That's impressive! You must sleep well," Blue laughed.
Maddy laughed with her. "Yes, totally. Which is good – it's terrible to be in bed and not able to sleep."
"Totally," Blue agreed.
Half an hour later they came in. Blue was shaking from the exertion, but Maddy was already talking about going back out after a second breakfast.
Suddenly Maddy turned to Blue and looked at her seriously. "So just how much did you enjoy it today and yesterday?"
Blue considered the question. There must be a hidden meaning. How did she feel about surfing? "I felt the best I've felt in months while I was out there," she answered truthfully.
Maddy gave her a small smile. He seemed suddenly more sedate. "So," he asked quietly, "what are you going to do now?"
"I don't understand," Blue responded.
"Are you going to pursue it? As far as I know you aren't doing any other sports." He looked down.
Blue was speechless. She hadn't even thought that far ahead. She couldn't imagine doing surfing as a sport. It had never occurred to her. "I-I like it. A lot. It...would be fascinating to pursue," she spoke carefully.
They were approaching Maddy's house. "I guess I'll have to bring it up with my parents," she finally concluded.
Maddy looked up at her. "You should. Surprising things can happen."
