Chapter 30

Blue stayed in the next few days. She did schoolwork and prepared herself for her math final. But she felt changed. She was irritable and annoyed all the time. All she focused on was when she'd get another chance to surf. Blue wanted to get out by herself, but wasn't ready to go without Maddy yet.

Wednesday she resorted to sending Kaitlyn a text. She wanted to go with Maddy but was afraid she would come across clingy.

do you know anyone who could go surfing with me later... ?

She clicked send. That text would hopefully get the idea across quickly enough to Kaitlyn.

And it did. Kaitlyn texted back within the half hour.

maybe! when you wanna go? the waves are sick right now, altho it's a bit windy out.

Blue glanced out the window. Kaitlyn was right – it was windy. Pretty windy. But she still wanted to go, didn't she?

Blue remembered how much fun she had had with Maddy last time, and felt a bit sorry she wasn't going with him. But she still really wanted to go, and going with Kaitlyn or a little wind wouldn't stop her.

perfect.

Before Blue could turn off her phone screen, Kaitlyn texted back.

yayaya! I'll pick you up in 20 mins in my pickup.

Kaitlyn had an old standard pickup with a mounted hard roofrack that had been part of it for the past 7 years. Her parents had given it to her when she'd started driving, her mother replacing it with a stationwagon. A stationwagon Kaitlyn had also taken over for the most part.

Blue pounded downstairs to her room, where she distractedly rushed through pulling on a bikini and her wetsuit. She was going surfing! Surfing – again. An adrenaline high pulsed through her veins, causing her to fumble with the wetsuit zipper and then trip over her own two feet.

Blue ran out the door leading to the garage. "I'm going surfing with Kaitlyn!" she called over her shoulder to whoever was listening. Too bad if she wasn't supposed to.

She sat down on the hard, cold concrete of the garage floor with her board on her lap and started waxing it like Maddy had shown her. Like she'd done before.

Blue sat there, slowly raking the soft wax across the deck of the board, staring out. Out at the driveway. At the road. The beach. The sand. Her home.

She sat there staring and thinking until an old, beat up, light blue pickup pulled into the driveway. One of the brakelights was out, and the front right corner of the bumper was dented. In the cab sat Kaitlyn, blonde hair piled in a knot, eyes glittering. She shifted into neutral and jumped out, jogging over to Blue. She grabbed the board from her friend and grinned.

"Ready to go carve?"
