Amber had a great relaxing weekend with Rachel and Jace. She went home Monday morning to make sure that Benny kept his promise. The promise that he would get the kids to school. Surprisingly enough he did keep his promise. Amber was thinking back and realized that this might have been the first promise he ever kept.
Over the next few weeks Amber's life was full of ups and downs. Deb was still not really talking to her and was getting ready for a forty-five day trip. It hurt Amber that her mom was still so mad. Amber tried to call her to tell her about what had happened to her leg and feet and all Amber got was an 'uh-huh' out of her. This was not like Deb at all and for her to stay mad for so long over weeds in the yard. All Amber could do was try.
Amber was also feeling guilty that Jace had canceled his trip to Europe because of her. She had not seen him since the weekend at Rachel's and was disappointed. Amber hoped that he had decided to go late, but saw him leave his drive way. She knew he was still in town. She wrote him a note and left it on his front door.
Jace,
I want to thank you for being so wonderful to me when I was injured. However, there was no need for you to cancel your trip all together. You are a great friend and wonderful man and I want you to go and have a wonderful time. Please. I am really tired of people having to change their lives around me.
Love Ya,
Amber
Amber looked at the closing of the letter. She was hoping he would see it like a friend meaning. She did not want to scare off his friendship by having him think she was in love with him. Only her and Rachel knew what Amber felt for Jace. She decided to keep it because it said Ya, instead of You. Amber was taping it to the front door when her phone rang, it was Rachel.
"Mom died." Rachel said sobbing into the phone.
"I am sorry hun, I know how much you loved her. How close you were and what she meant to you."
Amber hated death. She didn't hate it because she was scared of death; she hated what it did to the living.
"Are you going to go to Cali to make the arrangements for her?" This was all Amber could think to say.
"No, Walt is taking care of all of that. I said my good-bye's when I was there last."
All Amber could hear was sniffling in the phone.
"Come to my house for a few days and let me take care of you for once. You can pass out or cut your feet or maybe, if we are lucky, you might break something." Amber joked with Rach hoping it might help her.
It worked Rachel was laughing and agreed to come. She was going to bring the kids so they could play with Parker and Lily. Rachel had taken all of her kids out of school and they did school on the internet now. With all that was happening with the school district, the budget cuts and the lower test scores, she had enough. Amber was going to do the same with her kids the next school year too.
About twenty minutes after Amber got off the phone, Rachel showed up. She never bothered to ring the doorbell anymore, as her and Amber were very close. She felt she was at home when she was at Amber's. She knew that Amber felt the same way.
