The first person Jin Soo told he wanted to marry Im Jin-ah was not Jessica.
It wasn't Krystal.
It wasn't his mother.
It wasn't his father, his manager, Seohyun, Eunkyung, BoA, Go Ara, or any of the people who would have confidently claimed they knew everything important happening in his life.
It was Jin-ah's mother.
And technically, he didn't even tell her.

Jin Soo had rehearsed the sentence so many times that by the time he actually sat across from Jin-ah's mother, he could no longer remember which version sounded natural.
They were in a quiet restaurant in Seoul, deliberately nowhere he normally went.
Private room.
Late lunch.
No photographers.
No manager.
Just the two of them.
He'd told Jin-ah he had a meeting.
Which wasn't technically a lie.
His knee had been bouncing underneath the table for nearly ten minutes.
Jin-ah's mother finally looked down.
"Are you nervous?"
His leg stopped immediately.
"No."
She raised an eyebrow.
Jin Soo looked at his knee.
"...A little."
"A little?"
"Quite."
That made her smile.
She'd known him for years.
Long enough that the Jung Jin Soo everyone else saw—the actor, model, celebrity, enormous public figure—had mostly disappeared.
To her, he was simply the very tall young man who loved her daughter.
He had been coming to family dinners for years.
He'd brought gifts at holidays.
Remembered birthdays.
Helped carry things without being asked.
Fallen asleep on their sofa once after filming for nearly thirty hours and been so embarrassed when he woke up that he'd apologized repeatedly.
He'd been there long enough to become familiar.
Which somehow made today worse.
Jin Soo reached for his water.
Put it down without drinking.
"Mother."
She looked at him.
He'd called her that for some time.
Today it suddenly felt enormous.
"I wanted to ask you something."
"I assumed so."
He laughed nervously.
"You know?"
"I know you didn't invite me here because you missed me."
