Company tonight,"
The lad sighed.
His eyes wandered
Past the gate,
Then landed on
The row of houses
Across the street.
Out of their windows, light spilled;
Also, chatter and laughter,
Which the cold breeze
Brought to his ears
As muffled echoes.
"Thanks for always listening."
The crickets chirped
And the leaves rustled
In reply.
