"How's your shoulder?" Michael asked as he tore a piece of bread in half, handing me one of them as he started to eat the other. Last night was a blur. One minute I was telling the red haired boy my life story, and the next I was pathetically blubbering my eyes out while he cradled me.
"It's getting better." I say taking the piece of bread into my small , petite hands and taking small bites from it. Savouring the taste as if it was the last piece of food on Earth. But who knows, it could be my last meal on Earth...
"Good. We need to change the bandaging tonight again though. It was bleeding badly and a dirty bandage isn't going to help it at all!" He finished his bread and wiped his hands on his trousers. They had so many pockets on them, going all the way down his leg. They weren't baggy, but they weren't tight either. They were well fitted I guess you could say.
I just nodded as I carried on eating the bread.
"Me and the boys are hunting today, we are starting to run out of supplies from the cabin and we need to re-stock. I would say you could come but I'm not too sure about you and Calum being five feet within each other with a gun!" He chuckled a little at the end as he rested on the counter with his arms crossed over his broad chest.
I joined him in the laughter.
"Well if he doesn't shoot me first we should be just fine." I shrugged. It's true. I didn't come here to kill any of them. Hell I didn't even come here from my own will anyway! But I still wouldn't kill them. However if someone tried to kill me, they wouldn't stand a chance.
"If you promise to not try to leave and promise you won't shoot Calum then I guess you could come." He smiled. His smile was really nice. I haven't seen someone smile a lot lately. However when I met Michael, he always smiled.
"Why do you smile so much?" I asked. I should really get a filter on my mouth. It's not that I didn't like people smiling. I loved it! It was like a rare antique now, but that's why I wondered why he did.
"Well, we don't have a lot of big things, but we have loads of little things if you look for them! And well, you have to make the most of them!" He smiled again, I smiled back. It was like it was contagious. I made a mental note in my head: 'Enjoy the little things.' I like to
make mental notes in my head to help me survive. It became like a diary; something to keep me sane!We heard loud thumps coming down the stairs followed by 6 pairs of feet. I turned around and saw three boys marching down the creaky wooden steps.
"Michael it's safe to go, there isn't a walker in sight. We're looking around five miles to the stream." The one with a lip ring says as they reach the kitchen. He looks over to me and smiles. What is with this happy vibe from these guys?! "I don't think I ever introduced myself properly... I'm Luke!" He reached his hand out for me to shake it. I took his big hand in my small one and shook it cautiously.
"Callie." I respond then let it go.
I looked over at Calum who was practically burning a hole in my temple.
"Okay guys, Callie is coming with us. We are going down by the stream because according to Ashton there is a herd of deer breeding there."
"No! She can't come with us!" I didn't even need to turn around to know those words came from Calum.
"Why? Because you think I'll be better at killing them than you?" I rolled my eyes at him. He's so fucking pathetic.
"More like I think you'll end up getting all of us killed!" He glared at me.
"Well at this rate the only person that is gonna get us all killed is you!" The boys heads' turned to whoever gave a comeback like a tennis match. And at the moment the ball was in my court!
"Enough!" Michael glared at us both. "If either of you can't pull your shit together, then both of you will be staying here on guard! Got it?!" We just nodded but carried on glaring at each other.
"Now let's move!"I held my gun below my waist as we followed Michael through the trees as we came to a river. Michael put his hand out to his side, signalling everyone to stop. I looked over his shoulder to see four deers.
"We need to split up so we have all angles. Ashton, Calum, you take West wing. Luke, you take South. I'll stay here with Callie." They all nodded and started to walk around the lake.
"I could of stayed here by myself." I whisper to him.
"Not with your arm and craving to break the rules!" He smirks and shakes his head.
We crouch down and wait for gun shots, or any sign of walkers.
"You know, I've never met someone like you before." I look over to see Michael looking at me and smiling (again!)
"What do you mean?" I say back with a confused smile.
"You're so independent. And so determined to be so. You're strong, but aren't afraid to show weakness. You're cold, but kind. Your emotions are bipolar, but you're so calm. It's so fascinating to watch you, be you.."
I felt oddly warmed by his description of me. It had nothing to do with the way I looked, walked or talked. It was about me and who I am. I felt a slight blush on my cheeks, but not enough to show it. "And I strangely enjoy your company. Even if it's just sitting in the same room as you." I smiled at his words. It's strange, if we weren't in a life or death world right now, no one would say any of those things, and I've become suddenly grateful for that.
"Why?" Why does he enjoy my company? I'm hardly interesting, nor kind.
"What can I say? I like to enjoy the little things."
