Realizing they had fooled everyone, Fiyero and Elphaba left the wicked castle and began to search for a way to leave Oz after reconciling. Elphaba had just "melted" and she and scarecrow Fiyero needed to get the heck out of Oz before someone realized they were still alive. Suddenly, Fiyero looked up from their their hands, clasped together, and realized they weren't in Oz anymore. It seemed that Elphaba had another talent. Because she was a child of both worlds, it seemed that she could effortlessly cross from one world to another. He gasped. Elphaba looked around, then to Fiyero, then back to their new surroundings, then back to Fiyero again.

"Well, Fiyero," she began. "I've a feeling we're not in Oz anymore." A car whizzed by on the interstate in front of them, causing Elphaba to flinch. Fiyero wrapped his arms protectively around her. "It's alright, Elphie," he murmured in her ear. "I'll take care of you." Elphaba smiled at him. The stoplight flickered from green to red. "Well, aren't you going to move?" asked a voice from behind them. Elphaba turned around. The man took one look at her and backed off slowly, his hands raised in the air. Elphaba grimaced. No one here was used to her green skin, yet. "Look, the strange machines have stopped!" Fiyero called, snapping her out of her daze. She and Fiyero walked hesitantly across the street and just in the nick of time. As soon as Fiyero's foot hit the pavement on the other side of the crosswalk, the cars took off again.

This time, both Elphaba and Fiyero jumped. Quick to recover, Fiyero squeezed Elphaba's hand and led her toward the woods. Once under the safe cover of the trees, they noticed a nearby sign that read, Liberal Kansas six miles. "Didn't that child, Dorothy, say she lived in Kansas?" Elphaba remarked. Fiyero nodded. "Some place that started with an L..." "Liberal?" Elphaba asked. "Yeah," said Fiyero, snapping his fingers. "Too bad we didn't show up there. I bet she would help us." Elphaba pointed to the sign, rolling her eyes with an attitude she hadn't had time for in years. Fiyero smirked at her and they continued through the woods following the road.

About ten minutes later, they reached a sign that said, Liberal Kansas one mile. Fiyero seemed fine, but Elphaba fell on the ground, exhausted. Apparently she couldn't cross between worlds effortlessly. "Elphaba!" Fiyero cried, terrified that she was hurt. "I'm fine," Elphaba croaked. "I was just testing my power to see if I could get us back to Oz. Apparently not."

"How long did the Wizard stay in Oz?" Fiyero asked.

"I think twenty-four years. Two years before I was born, he showed up."

"Try again twenty-four hours after you brought us here," Fiyero suggested. "Good idea. How long has it been?" Elphaba asked. "I don't know." Fiyero said. He looked up at the sky. "Less than two hours. The sun's barely moved." Elphaba nodded, then tried to stand, but collapsed, dizzy. "Do you need to rest?" Fiyero asked, concerned. "I'm fine," Elphaba assured him, though her voice shook. Fiyero shook his head. "No, you're not. I'll carry you." He lifted her up in his flimsy straw arms, but couldn't seem to hold onto her long. He turned away, ashamed. "Maybe I do need to rest," Elphaba suggested. "It sure would make me feel better to have something soft to rest my head on. Something like, oh, I don't know, straw, maybe?"

Fiyero grinned. Elphie flashed a brilliant smile back at him, then pressed her lips to his stitched mouth. "I love you," she breathed. "I love you, too," he replied, beaming. Elphaba was more exhausted than she thought. Her heavy eyelids began to close as soon as she let her head rest in Fiyero's lap and the strange world around her went black. She woke later on to find Fiyero asleep underneath her. She stroked his cheek, waking him gently. They both rose unsteadily to their feet. Elphaba's muscles ached from sleeping on the ground for who knows how long. According to the sun's position, they'd been asleep at least a half hour. Fiyero, on the other hand, felt nothing, having no muscles himself.
