CHAPTER 27

John

I stood outside Katherine's door. I couldn't wait to meet her. I hope she told her mom about her. How did she react when she found out that her daughter was a shapeshifter. I thought about calling Katherine. But I wanted to see her.

I rang the doorbell. After sometime the door opened and a middle aged woman came out. This must be her mom.

She looked at me not recognizing and asked "Who are you?"

"Hi, I am John. I am Katherine's friend. Is she here?"

"No. She went out. She said she had to meet someone. Do you want to come in?"

I thought about it. Before I could say anything she said, "Come on in". She smiled and opened the door wide open letting me in.

"Make yourself comfortable. Do you want some tea, coffee?" she asked.

"Just some water, if you don't mind", I said.

"Of course, I'll be right back", she said and went inside. She came back with a glass of water and gave it to me. She sat down on the sofa crossing her legs. I was seated across her.

"So, John, you say you are my daughter's friend but she never told me about you", she asked.

Of course Katherine didn't tell her mom about her new boyfriend. She had so much going on in her life right now. Speaking of which did she tell her mom about her being a shapeshifter. Last time I talked to Katherine she said she'd tell her mom everything. But now seeing her mom so calm it seems she hadn't said anything. But how could she not. Her mom must have heard her daughter got arrested by the police. Thanks to Mark. I mean that's why her mom came here didn't she. She must have asked Katherine about it. What did Katherine tell her then?

"John", she asked interrupting my thoughts.

"Yes, Mrs. Winters", I said looking at her. Remembering what she had asked earlier I said "We just became friends recently".

"That's nice", she said looking at me.

I really don't understand what's going on here. Mrs. Winters seems normal. I've to know what's going on. But how? "How is Katherine?"

"How would she be? She's fine", she said narrowing her eyes.

Idiot! Stupid question. "I came to see if she was okay. I mean I heard that she's been arrested. I want to know how she was doing".

For a moment her face looked sad but then quickly she smiled and said "Oh she's fine. It was all a big misunderstanding. Even the police came to house yesterday and apologized".

Okay, now I don't get anything. What does she mean by misunderstanding? She said the police came here yesterday. May be Katherine didn't tell Mrs. Winters anything. May be Katherine posed as a police officer yesterday and cleared up everything. I have to talk to Katherine about this.

I got up. "I'll talk Katherine later. It was nice to meet you Mrs. Winters".

She just nodded and then I left. After I started driving, I called Katherine. It went to her voice mail. Where was she? Just when I was about give up she picked up.

"Hey, where are you?" I asked.

"I am with Natasha", she said.

"What are you doing with her?"

"I'll tell you everything. Meet me later. At the diner, near Jenna's bookstore, 6 PM".

"Okay. Katherine wait".

"Yeah, what is it?"

"I was just at your house"

"Oh. Did you meet my mom?"

"Yeah, she's nice. Didn't you tell her?"

"I'll tell you everything. Meet me later".

"Katherine, are you okay", I asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine".

"I love you", I said.

She waited for a few seconds and said, "I love you, too".

She didn't seem okay. I've to see her.

At 10 minutes to 6 PM, I reached the diner and waited for Katherine. After few minutes she entered the diner. She searched for me. I waved my hand when she saw me and she came towards me. I gave her a hug and then kissed her.

"I missed you. Where were you all day?" I said.

"I missed you too. I was with Natasha. I asked her to put up a spell for you and Jenna so that Karen can't come after you guys. You'll be safe from now on", she said and we sat down.

"That's good. Is everything okay with you? What happened with your mom yesterday?"

"Actually she left this afternoon".

"What? Why did she leave?"

"Karen is still out there John. I thought it would be best if she left. So I made her leave".

So my guess was right. She did pose as the police officer and cleared up everything. "Katherine, are you sure about what you did? You said you'd tell her everything. Why did you change your mind?"

"I know. But when the time came, I just couldn't tell her. So, I thought of something else."

She still looked troubled. "Okay, so what are you going to do now?" I asked.

She looked up at me with a pained look on her face, "Actually, that's what I wanted to talk about?"

She looked down not meeting my eyes and said, "I'm leaving this town. We can't see each other anymore".

"What?"

"I'm sorry. But we're done".

I reached for her hand. "Wait, what happened? Where is this coming from?" I asked panic building inside me.

"As long as I am with you, you guys won't be safe. Karen might still try something to get back at me. I don't want you and Jenna to get hurt".

"So that's your solution. Leaving", I asked.

"I'm sorry", she said.

"At least look at me when I talk to you", I said. I was getting angry. How could she leave me? Doesn't she know that I love her?

She looked up at me with tears in her eyes.

"Please Katherine, don't do this. I love you", I said touching her cheek. She closed her eyes leaning her face into my palm.

"John, try to understand. There is no future with me for you. I can live forever. But you can't. It's best that we end it now and save us all from the heartbreak."

"You're breaking my heart right now", I said raising my voice a little. The people in the diner turned towards us but I didn't care.

"Please, I love you", I said.

"I'm sorry", she said and she got up. "I'm leaving. Don't follow me" she said and she left.

"No", I said getting up and ran after her. I caught her shoulder and made her turn towards me. "Katherine, wait", I said.

She then did something I never thought she would. She pushed me away. I then fell on the floor few feet away from her. I forgot she had supernatural strength. All the people in the diner began looking at us.

"I'm sorry", Katherine said and ran out.

No, I can't lose her. I got up and ran after her. When I came outside on the road, I couldn't see her. I searched for everywhere but I couldn't find her. She must have changed into someone else. Shit! Why did you do this Katherine? I asked myself running my hands into my hair standing alone in midst of the crowd on the road.
