CHAPTER TWO
I gasp, sitting up in one quick movement. I can hear my heart beating in my ears. My breathing is ragged and short. This can't be real; this cannot be happening. My eyes glance in speedy flashes around my room, looking for any sign of him. There was none. As far as I could tell, it had all been a dream. How had it become so vivid, though?
Heavy footsteps sound from the bottom floor of my house, and I turn to swing my legs over the side of my bed, ready to investigate. I scream out in pain, and that's when I know that it wasn't just a dream.
I can literally feel blood gushing out of the wound on my side; a reminder of the man whom attacked me on the battlefield. I fall back into the bed, closing my eyes as if it this would help block out the pain. With the realization of the truth, I can smell my mate's scent lingering in the room. He's been here.
I hear someone running up the stairs, taking them by two's, and I jump out of bed, holding my side to keep it from bleeding anymore than it already was. I didn't have to see who was coming up the stairs to know who it was. It was Alpha Adrien. I push my body to find the bathroom not too far from my bed.
I step into the bathroom, and my bedroom door slams open. Against my own better judgement, I decide to look. I find my mate looking straight at my very own bed in horror. What was his issue?
I groan, moving another step back so that the door was able to shut. My eyes meet my mate's and he growls loudly, stalking towards the bathroom. I yelp, and slam the door, locking it behind me.
His fists pound on the door repeatedly, "Little mate!" I shriek in response, backing away from the door, and searching for an escape. "You're on the third floor, so for you're own good, I'd suggest not trying to make an escape," my mate snarls, and I groan.
I move towards the window anyways, and I let out a tiny shout at my wound continuing to stretch. My mate growls, and slams his fist down on the other side of the door. My old door creaks in protest.
"Don't make me break down this door," he says. "Is that a threat?" I yell back. "Don't play with me, baby," the angry alpha warns. "Or what?" It sure is easy to be brave when you're under the impression that nothing can hurt you.
There's a loud crackling noise, as the hinges to my door fall apart, and my door falls to the ground. I scream on the top of my lungs as my mate stalks towards me. The look in his eyes could kill, but I move away from him. As I back into the wall, I scrape my side on the towel rack and howl in pain. I fall to the floor, holding my side tightly.
Two strong, steady arms wrap around me, lifting me up, and I feel sparks everywhere. A shiver racks my body as my mate carries me back into my room. He lies me down on my bed. I fight against him, trying to sit back up.
He sighs in frustration, holding me down with just one hand. I decide to stop struggling, and I drop my arms. I stay still for a few minutes and my mate finally releases his hold on me.
"Stay here," he whispers, and walks out of the room. He returns quickly holding a wash cloth, peroxide, and a large bandage. He kneels down beside my bed, and looks up at me. I nod, and he lifts my shirt slowly.
He carefully removes my bloody bandages, and I bite my lip, holding back a groan. He winces and mutters an apology. His eyes examine my wound, and his fingers skim the side of my stomach. I feel my stomach erupt in butterflies. Why was I reacting this way to his simple touch? He pours some peroxide onto the towel, and holds it close to my stomach. I close my eyes tightly, preparing for the sting. He lightly presses it to me, and I let out a small scream. He pulls it away, and reexamines it. Apparently satisfied, he re bandages it. He pulls my shirt back down so that it covers my stomach. He blinks up at me, and then stands, backing away from me.
I look away from him mumbling, "Thank you." He pulls up a chair next to my bed, "Of course, anytime." I give him a small smile, and he glances down at my hand, a conflicted look on his face. He decides to just go for it, and he grabs my hand. Sparks ignite, and I don't let go. He seems satisfied at this, and his thumb rubs circles into the side of my hand.
I cough, "So, um, where are my parents?" He chuckles at my awkwardness, "They're with the Alpha and Luna looking over the contract." I raise an eyebrow, "What contract?" "A peace treaty between our packs that my beta and I have written," he answers, staring intently at me. "Oh," I respond, lamely. I didn't need to ask why this treaty was taking place. I was the reason.
An uncomfortable silence grows between my mate and I, and I cast my gaze downward. If I couldn't see him, then maybe he would disappear. Wishful thinking was just that; a wish.
My mate clears his throat, "I'm Alpha Adrien." My eyes widen in surprise. We were doing formal introductions? He gives me an expectant look. "Oh, right, I'm Scarlett," I mumble. I think I see a small smile before it's gone, "That's a lovely name." I gape at him. I couldn't believe that this was the ruthless alpha of the Dark Crescent Pack. I cough, "Oh, well, thank you Alpha." He scowls, "Don't call me that. I'm your mate. It's Adrien, but only to you." "Okay, s-s-sorry, Adrien," I stutter. He gives me a firm nod, looking pleased.
My mate didn't seem as horrid as I thought he would be. He looked at me with worry, he held my hand with warmth, and he talked to me sweetly.
Very suddenly, he drops my hand and walks to the door. He turns around, pointing at me, "Don't you dare go anywhere." I gasp at the change in attitude. He exits the room swiftly, slamming my bedroom door behind him. I believe I spoke too soon in regards to my mate.
