"You in a skirt?" Jake exclaimed on that Friday morning, a week later, as soon as I entered psychology.
I blushed when I saw a few heads turn in my direction, and Shawn shamelessly looking me up and down.
"Shut up." I mumbled and sat down next to him, placing my notebooks on the desk. "Luke likes them."
"You don't need to dress up for a guy. Dress up for yourself." Sophia said and I turned my head to look at her.
"It's not necessary to dress up for a guy, but if I want to I can."
She smiled and mocked applause, just as the teacher came in.
"Settle down everyone. I know it's first period." She sighed and sat down at her desk, pulling out the attendance sheet and starting to call out names.
When she got to Luke's name, no one answered and that's when I noticed that he wasn't there.
I quickly texted him under the desk to make sure he was okay.
Rey: are you okay? Where are you? :)
Luke (heart emoji): im home. Sick :((((
Rey: aww get better x
Luke (heart emoji): of course (heart emoji) I think im coming to the game tho
Rey: YAY :)
Once the teacher was done calling attendance she sat up from the desk and turned around to write on the blackboard.
When she was done writing, she turned back to look at us with a smile.
"Today's topic is love. Or identifying love."
I looked behind her to see that she wrote 'THEORIES OF LOVE'.
"How do we usually tell when someone is in love?"
A few hands shot up in the air, and Ms. Lowe pointed at Mandy so she could answer.
"We can tell by their actions, words and reactions."
"Very good Mandy. Can anyone give me examples of actions that can determine whether a person is in love? How can you tell based only on their gestures and the way they behave?"
"I saw on a show that usually if two people are interested in each other their shoes will always point at each other." Sophia said and Ms. Lowe nodded, writing that on the blackboard, which we also had to copy onto our notebooks.
"Anyone else?"
"Love is when someone else's happiness is your happiness." Jake said and I smiled, shaking my head because he was quoting Lana Del Rey.
"That is actually very true." Ms. Lowe said and quickly wrote it on the blackboard. "Studies show that when we're in a room full of people and someone says something funny, the first person we look at to see if they're laughing is the person we love the most in the room."
I nodded because I saw that on a Grey's Anatomy episode once. It had never happened to me before. Well, it actually did; I'd always look at Jake because his laugh was the funniest and his face expressions were killing me.
"Yes Matt?"
"Is it possible to love two people at once?"
"Yes it is."
"And how do we know which one to be with? Which one to pick?"
"Well there is a saying that if you love to people at the same time, choose the second one because if you really loved the first one you wouldn't have fallen for the second."
I turned my head to see Ian looking confused, obviously asking himself the same question I was.
What the fuck is Matt talking about?
"Have any of you ever heard of philophobia? Yes Brian?"
"It's the fear of falling in love."
"That's correct. We define philophobia as the abnormal, irrational fear of love. Can anyone give me some reasons for a person to be afraid of love?"
"They don't want to get hurt." I said.
"Also, people will never love anyone until they learn to love themselves." Mandy said.
"Very good."
"Some people don't really believe in love because they have never felt attracted to anyone." Sophia spoke.
"Or people were hurt in the past so they don't want to relieve that experience again." Lyall added.
Is everyone in here throwing shade at each other?
"OR some people just think love is shit and a waste of time." Shawn spoke up for the first time and everyone turned to look at him surprised. He usually slept during first period.
"Mr. Mendes. So glad to see you cooperate. Please elaborate your statement."
"Well. Everything comes to an end at some point. Relationships either end in breaks ups or marriage. And marriage always ends up in divorce."
"Only forty percent of couples get divorced."
"Which is almost half. Why waste several years of your life with someone and then break it off, only to see that life already passed you by."
"That's a good point, but I beg to differ. People who don't find someone to love usually end up depressed and alone. Most of these cases lead to suicide or dementia."
Shawn snorted.
"When you say 'to love', do you mean find someone who loves you or find someone to love?" I asked.
"Someone to love you." Ms. Lowe said.
"See, but that's not fair." Brian observed. "You can't force someone to love you, so it's not your fault if no one does."
"Everyone has at least someone who loves them."
"Parents don't count." Shawn said.
"Of course not. It's just that some people never confess their love so that why we feel like no one loves us. Yes Sophia?"
"Is it true that everyone has that one person they will always like no matter the circumstances?"
"Yes, it's a psychological proven fact."
"So philophobic people are never going to love?" I asked.
"No, they are going to love but they're never going to admit to it to someone, or themselves."
"But are they going to be in a relationship though?" Ian asked.
"Yes they can. It's just like being homosexual and having a heterosexual relationship. People can lie to protect themselves. We have time for one more question."
"Is there a difference between how a girl loves and how a boy loves?" Matt asked.
"Yes. If a boy is in love then it's much more serious and meaningful, and if a girl is in love, she has more chances of getting with the person she loves."
I wasn't sure if whatever she said was sexist or not, but the bell rang so the psychology period became the last thing on my mind.

"The question is do I want a hotdog or do I want popcorn?" Sophia asked a later that while we were walking towards the entrance to the football pitch, ready for the second game of the season.
"I'm going to get popcorn so you can get the hotdog and then eat from me." I offered and she smiled.
"That's the best idea I've ever heard so far."
I shrugged and tugged my skirt further down. I was wearing a skirt because Luke said that he liked me in them, so I was just trying to please him-and also, I was trying to come out of my so called 'shell' and I was doing this new thing where I tried not to care what people thought of me. It wasn't going well at all, but I was still trying.
The bleachers were already full but Luke had saved us a seat in the back, were we also sat last time.
"Hey babe." He smiled, voice obviously rough from the cold, and pressed a kiss to my lips after we sat down. "Nice skirt."
"Thanks."
"Aren't you cold?"
"Not yet. Why? Do you want to be a gentleman and give me your jacket?" I laughed.
"Yes I am."
"I'll pretend to be cold in a few minutes then."
He pinched my cheek and put an arm around me, pulling me into him.
Fifteen minutes later they called everyone's names and the player appeared on the pitch one by one. When they called Shawn's name, I couldn't help but notice that he once again started looking through the crowd but didn't find who he was looking for, which made him bite his lip and turn his head.
"Who is Shawn looking for?" I asked Luke, whose hand was now on my thigh under the dress.
"I don't know? Maybe a girl to shag tonight after the bar."
"Oh."
That made sense.
They ended up winning (of course), 2-0 for us, which had everyone celebrate and carry Matt (who had scored both of the goals) on their shoulders into the changing rooms.
"Come with me to the bathroom." I asked Sophia, who was busy on her phone.
"I can't right now."
