After the fireworks everyone decided to go back inside because it's really cold and we have a lot of drinks left.
Shawn seems to have forgotten about his promise of going back up to his room, but I don't really mind...per se. I want and actually owe Jake to get drunk with him, so I start looking for him. I eventually find him in the kitchen, talking to Ian with a drink in his hand.
"Renee!" he exclaims, raising his cup at me.
"Jakeee." I trail off and walk over to the counter to pour myself a drink. "I promised you we'd get drunk tonight, so let's do it."
"Ian, you're free to join us." Jake tells him and Ian nods, obviously in.
Jake offers to do the honors and places three shot glasses on the island counter that he fills with tequila to the brim.
"To a New Year and new beginnings!" Jake says and the three of us down it.
The alcohol burns my tongue and my throat, but I put my glass down anyway to do another one.
"Another one?" Ian asks and Jake nods, filling the glasses.
"Three, two, one." I count and there goes another. I'm already feeling a bit tipsy but one more shot won't hurt. And besides, three is a lucky number.
"Let's do one more. So there won't be a pair number. That's for dead people." Ian justifies, as if having read my mind.
"Alright, fair enough." Jake agrees and fills the glasses once again.
This time, Ian counts down and the three of us drink together.
"One more?" I ask, although everything is already spinning and I feel a bit ill.
"I think you've had enough for the night." Someone behind me says and I roll my eyes as I turn around to face Shawn.
"You're not my parent." I say and cross my arms.
"He would make a great daddy though." Jake tells me and Shawn snorts.
"If you're not going to stop drinking, you're going to either throw up and wake up with a massive hangover, or you'll end up in an alcoholic coma."
"Oh shit, sorry, I forgot you are an alcohol doctor." I sarcastically say and try to walk away from him, but I can't really walk on five-inch heels while drunk, so I stumble and almost fall down. Again catches me by my arm and holds me upright.
"You need to lay down."
"Is that lingo for you wanting to have sex with me?"
"I'm not going to have sex with you when you're this drunk. You need to sleep it off, come on."
"No." I stubbornly say but he's quick to wrap an arm around my knees and one around my back, before he starts carrying me towards the giant flight of stairs.
"You have such I nice house." I slur as he walks upstairs. "And a nice face. Your face is nicer than your house. I wonder if your dick is as big as your house. Or have I seen it before? Have I?"
"No, you haven't."
He pushes the door to his bedroom with his foot, and then settles me down on the now vacant bed.
"Wait. Where are Mandy and Katherine? Weren't they here?"
"You mean Mandy and Sophia, right?"
"Riiight. I thought it was Katherine since they were together." I mumble and swing my legs in the air so my shoes can come off.
One accidentally almost hits Shawn in the face and I laugh so loud I even scare myself.
"How about I undress you so neither of us will get hurt, huh?"
"You're just using it as an excuse to get me naked." I say and point at him. Well, not really point at him, more like a meter to the right of him, but I consider it an accomplishment, based on how incredibly drunk I am right now.
"Believe me, I am not."
I sit up and remove my earrings that I place on the bedside table, and then try to remove my dress.
"You have to unzip it from the back." I tell Shawn when he impatiently walks over to me.
"I think I got that, thank you." He sarcastically answers and sits down behind me to unzip my dress.
I stand up and turn to face him so my dress can fall down at my feet.
"Done."
"Here."
He offers me one of his shirts to cover myself up with and I pout but pull it over my head anyway.
"This shirt smells like you." I observe and walk away from the bed, in the direction of the bathroom.
"What are you doing?"
"I need to pee."
After I do what I told him I would, I wash my hands and excitedly walk back into the room. I try to hop into bed, but I miss it by far and fall on my elbows on the ground.
"Jesus Rey, are you okay?"
"That rhymes!" I observe as I'm in pain. I rub my elbows simultaneously, and he helps me get on the bed. "Will you stay here with me?"
"Um, sure."
"At least until I pass out?"
"Yeah." He assures me and I crawl under the covers.
"Your bed is so fluffy and smells so nice. I love it." I say as I pull the duvet all the way up to my neck.
He sits down next to me, but over the covers, and pulls his phone out. He smells like cigarettes and expensive cologne, and it's driving me crazy. I have to say something or else my head will explode.
"You smell good."
"Thank you." He answers, not looking up from the screen of his phone.
"Why aren't you paying me any attention?"
Shawn loudly sighs and puts his phone down on the duvet, before looking at me pointedly.
"Yes, you have all my attention now."
"Great. I feel so much better." I sarcastically say but don't look away from him. "Were we really going to have sex if I didn't get so drunk?"
"Probably yes. I mean, if you wanted to."
"Of course I do. I mean, I'm almost eighteen years old and I've never had sex. Not that there's something wrong with that but I just want to know what so great about it you know?"
"It's not that big of a deal, it just feels great and you forget everything for a few minutes. Depends on who you're fucking."
"Oh."
I don't say anything after that, I just close my eyes and try to go to sleep.
"You want to sleep? Should I leave you alone?"
"Oh, no. I'm just...tired. And my head hurts. So."
"Right."
He moves to get up, but I stop him.
"You said you'd stay with me."
"I just wanted to close the balcony door properly because it's getting cold."
"Oh. Okay."
Shawn gets up and walks over to the balcony so he can close the door, and then comes back. He takes off his shoes and then gets under the covers with me. He's warm, so I snuggled up to him and place my head on his chest. I'm not exactly sure how much he likes that, but he doesn't comment on it so I take it as a yes.
We fall asleep like that, tangled up as our breaths get even.
---
The following morning is filled with hungover people moaning as they try to eat and drink something so they won't throw up, and unfortunately, I am one of them.
Katherine and I leave once people start to call taxis and their parents, and my mom picks us up. Sophia, Jake, and I talk about having a sleepover tonight to emotionally prepare ourselves for school in two days.
When I get home, I observe that my parents are unusually silent and that something is up.
"Everything okay?" I ask at the lunch table, while everyone is enjoying their soup, including me. I decide to start eating in SMALL amounts three times a day so my teeth and hair wouldn't fall out and so that I won't faint, but I know I am going to immediately throw up once I leave the table.
"Um...we have something to tell you." My mother starts and I put the spoon down, knowing that this is her serious bad news face.
"What happened?"
"While we were out last night, no one was here to watch Charlie."
"Did she run away?" I ask, immediately feeling sick to my stomach.
"No...she was run over."
"By who?"
I don't really want to cry, but I feel terrible and like I've lost someone important.
"We don't know, but we found her this morning across the street."
"And where did you put her?"
"The garbage disposal behind the apartment buildings."
"You just threw her out?" I exclaim, pushing my chair back from the table.
"What else were we supposed to do?"
"I'm not hungry anymore." I say as I run upstairs and into the bathroom, throwing up everything that I have in my stomach and not even on purpose.
I feel too sick to face everyone right now so I throw myself in my bed and grab my phone. I tell Jake and Sophia about it, and of course they're both sorry and heartbroken because the three of us had found her three years prior, under to a car that was parked next to our school.
I get a new message, and I see it's Shawn asking how I'm doing.
Me: I'm ok, you?
Shawn: everything alright?
Me: no
Shawn: :(
Shawn: what happened?
Me: my cat was run over
Me: and my parents threw her in the garbage bin ffs
Shawn: I'm sorry :(
Me: what are you doing?
Shawn: getting ready to go to this boring charity new years gala with my parents
Me: where is it?
Shawn: Hilton
Me: ooh that's posh
Me: bring me some soap back :))
Shawn: will do ;)
He goes offline after that, probably because he has to shower, but not without promising that he'll text me later. I get up and start packing for Sophia's, even though a sleepover is the last thing on my mind right now.
My mother doesn't even tell me to be back home at 12, obviously feeling guilty about what happened to Charlie.
Sophia's mom answers the door with a big smile, welcoming me inside and taking off my coat, although I insist she doesn't have to. Then she lets me know that there are cookies in the kitchen if I want some, right before I thank her and walk up the stairs.
Jake is already there, greeting me with a big hug and a giant, sloppy kiss on my lips.
"Don't you have a boyfriend?" Sophia asks from inside her room and I look at him surprised.
"I was supposed to tell her!" he exclaims.
"Tell me what?"
"I know that this isn't the right time, but well...Ian and I are kind of dating."
"What? Since when?"
"Since yesterday, at the New Year's party."
"Oh my God! This is huge!" I say and hug him. "What did Matt say?"
"He doesn't...know yet. And we'd like to stay like that for the next two weeks if possible. To see if we...you know. Are actually going to last for a while."
"Alright, sure."
We then settle on Sophia's giant double bed with her laptop and an arsenal of crisps and ice cream, putting a chick flick on. It's like a ritual. Every Friday night before school starts after at least a week of vacation, the three of us gather at one of our houses for a girl's night in.
"So you and Shawn huh?" Sophia asks as the movie plays, and I can feel both of them watching me with full mouths and curious glares.
"Yeah...no. We're not like, together. And I don't think we'll ever be."
"But you like him." Jake says with his mouth full.
"And he likes you." Sophia adds, almost spitting out her ice cream.
Why do my best friends always shove stuff way too much food in their mouths?
"Why are you saying he likes me?"
"Because of the way he looks at you." They say likes it's the most obvious thing in the world.
"How does he look at me? He looks at me like he looks at everyone."
"No, he doesn't." Sophia says and takes a long sip of coke.
"Yeah, she's right. I've seen him look at you in class with such a cute smile when you weren't looking."
"He doesn't even go to classes most of the time." I try to defend myself, although I'm not sure why.
"He does attend the classes you two share. You should pay attention next time."
"I will."
The movie finishes half an hour later after our talk, and that's when Sophia finally pulls out two bottles of white wine from under her bed. It's past eleven and her parents have gone to sleep because they've both got work in the morning, so it's pretty safe for us to drink, even though they're both 18.
"To a new year, new boyfriends, and to Rey turning 18 in a month." She says and raises the bottle before taking a large gulp.
"To getting dick, a good year of school, and more sex for all of us." Jake adds and takes a gulp himself, and then hands me the bottle.
"To...a good new year, new beginnings, and changes."
"You're boring." Jake complains as I drink, and then drink again. "Jesus, do you want to get drunk?"
"Yeah."
"Then let's get fucking drunk."
So we do, by putting Keeping Up With The Kardashians on the TV and drinking every time someone said 'like'.
"God what I wouldn't give to be a Kardashian." Jake mumbles and pouts, leaning his head against my shoulder.
"Why would you want to though? Your privacy would be likeee...gone." I say and make a 'poof' sound. My head is spinning a bit and Sophia is sexting with Liam, so Jake and I focus on each other.
"Yeah but...I would have the booty though."
"You already have the booty Jake."
"I know. Harry said he likes it."
"Of course he does." I giggle. "Does he have a big dick?"
"Mhm...the biggest. In the world." He slurs and smiles like a fool in love.
"What will you do if Matt gets mad?"
"Why would he get mad? He's dating el."
"Yeahh..." I drag on, closing my eyes, thinking that after two bottles of wine I could fall asleep just like this.
That is, until my phone annoyingly rings from across the room. It's the one time I hate hearing Martin Garrix's beat drop.
"Who the fuck calls you at twelve in the morning?" Sophia complains from her window seat.
"Shawn." Jake immediately guesses, and I'm about to flip him off but Shawn's name is indeed showing up on the screen.
"Yeah?" I answer, trying to sound as sober as possible.
"Where are you?"
"At Sophia's. What's up?"
"Well...I'm in the park across the street and I can't stay long because I told my parents I was going out for a smoke...so can you like, sneak out?"
My heart picks up its rate.
"Alright? I'll be there in a moment."
"Where are you going?" Jake asks when he sees me putting on one of Sophia's thicker jackets and a beanie.
"Shawn's outside so I'm going to meet him for a minute. That okay?"
Sophia answers with a wave of her hand so I take it as a yes. Jake locks the door behind me and I exit the yard without a sound.
Shawn is waiting on a bench in the park like he said, with his blazer buttoned all the way up. It's a bit cold and I'm freezing in my cotton pajama bottoms as I make my way towards him.
"Wazzzuuuup." I greet and sit down next to him, crossing my legs.
"Are you drunk?"
"Shhhh. I'm Rey, by the way."
He rolls his eyes with a smile and pulls me across his lap.
"I've got something for you."
"Is it money? A car? What?" I furrow my brows, listing off things I'd like.
"No."
He then manages to unbutton his blazer to reveal a fluffy white ball of fur.
"What-NO!" I exclaim when I see a small kitten looking up at me with innocent eyes.
"I got you a new cat. Thought you might like a new one."
"This is...wow."
"And I know it might not be like Charlie-" he starts but I interrupt him with a quick peck on the mouth, surprising him.
"No, it's great." I check to see if it's a female or male. "He's great. Thank you so much. What am I going to name him?"
"Whatever you'd like."
"I'm going to name him...Nacho."
Shawn snorts as I take Nacho into my arms.
"Why Nacho?"
"Because I could really use some nachos right now to sober me up."
"There's a non-stop right around the corner. I'll walk you there." He offers and I can't deny his offer to actually buy me some nachos.
So he grips into my hips and lifts me off his lap, and then we start walking towards the store with Nacho in my arms.
He's so cute and tiny, and he's already asleep by the time we reach the store. It's empty, of course, and the man at the checkout counter is fast asleep.
I pick out three different bags of nachos and a sauce before we head to the checkout. He offers to pay for me (I knew he would) and I accept, without feeling guilty at all. If I had any money on me, I would've paid for them, but I don't so...
Shawn then walks me all the way to Sophia's door, where he orders a taxi to take him back to the hotel.
"My parents probably think I'm trying to finish my pack." he says and smiles as I comb through Nacho's fur with the actual nacho-filled bag hanging from my arm.
"Thank you for this. I appreciate it. You're really nice."
He shrugs and scratches the back of his neck, probably not knowing what his next move should be, so I say:
"You can kiss me, you know?"
And then he smiles as he leans down to press our lips into a kiss that quickly evolves into a heated makeout session.
"See you on Monday?" Shawn asks when the taxi he ordered pulls up next to us.
"Yeah." I breathe and watch him leave before I look up to see Jake and Sophia with their noses taped to her window. I shake my head, smiling, and then walk inside.
Jake opens the door for me and no one says anything until I place Nacho and the nachos on her bed.
"Okay so let's recap. He leaves an exquisite gala in the middle of the night to bring you a really cute kitten from God-knows-where; he buys you food and then walks you home. Why don't you fucking want him as a boyfriend?" Jake asks once his mouth is filled with cheesy nachos.
"Because...I don't know. I'm definitely not going to ask him out or anything."
"Why not?!"
"Becauseeee...if he turned me down I'd be too embarrassed. And it would be weird. No thank you."
"Are we talking about weirdness about the same guy who ate you out?" Sophia sarcastically asks as she strokes Nacho.
"Yeah we are."
They both sigh and then the conversation shifts towards Sophia and Lyall's official three-month anniversary, thank God.
Later that morning when I go to sleep, I text Shawn one last thank you as I fall asleep with a smile on my face.
-
The first day of school after winter holidays comes way too quickly, and I'm definitely in no mood for it when the alarm rings at seven on the dot. I get out of bed at a snail's pace, and then walk all the way to the bathroom.
Nacho, who's accommodated himself quite quickly in my house, is quick on my heels.
"Of course you're cheery and happy today. You don't have school." I mumble as I brush my teeth and wash my face.
He watches me dress up and then bother to apply some mascara and eyeliner, before I walk back to my room. I pack my stuff for the day, kiss Nacho goodbye, and watch his as he crawls into his small bed to go back to sleep.
I look at myself in the mirror one last time before I intend to go downstairs.
Everyone's at the table, including Ellie and Chris, who came home for the holidays but I didn't get to spend too much time with.
I eat an apple as mum delivers a speech about paying attention in school because there are less than five months left of classes, and how the exams are coming up and University and all that shit that I don't really bother listening to.
I know what I have to do, without my mother being on my case 24/7.
My dad drops Katherine and I a block away from my school, and we don't bother quickening our pace because there are ten minutes left.
When we finally get inside, everyone is walking around like zombies, obviously still missing the holidays and being able to sleep in with no stress whatsoever.
I spot Shawn by Jake's locker, talking about something that seems important, so I tell Katherine I'll see her later and walk in their direction.
Shawns wearing a white V-neck, beige skinny jeans, white converse and my ultimate weakness; a jean button-up. His hair is up in a quiff and it takes everything I've got not to kiss him right then and there.
"Hi." I say and they both turn to greet me. "What are you guys talking about?"
"Ian's nineteenth birthday. He doesn't want anything fancy so we thought we'd either go to like a club or a restaurant. Or both. You know, just the squad." Jake says and I nod.
"Yeah. He's not the partying type." I agree. "A small get-together would make him happy."
"We have to prepare ourselves for your eighteenth birthday two weeks after right?" Jake asks and elbows me.
"I don't want to throw a big party either. I'm tired of those."
"How can you say you're tired of partying?" Jake exclaims.
"Well we've had at least one party every week during the holidays and to be honest I'm tired."
Jake shakes his head in disbelief and Shawn doesn't say anything because the bell rings, announcing that classes are starting.
I walk over to my locker where I leave my backpack and get out my English stuff. Sophia smirked at me when I sat down at the desk next to her.
Mr. Grey wasn't here yet, so we spent the couple of minutes left talking about Ian's upcoming birthday and about the upcoming student exchange program that was actually going to be during the week right after my birthday.
The door opens and Mr. Grey finally enters the room, greeting us with a smile on his face and a cup of coffee in hand.
"I don't believe any of you have made any progress or even an attempt to read something over the break, so open your books where we left off last time. Mendes start reading."
Shawn sighs and opens the book before he starts reading as the rest of us take notes.
When the bell finally rings, Mr. Grey asks Sophia to stay behind because he has something to talk to her about, so I take Shawn's invitation to accompany Brian and him to the back of the school for a smoke.
"I almost didn't wake up this morning, I fell asleep in algebra today." Brian tells us as he takes a drag out of his cigarette.
"Same here. I don't even know why I'm at school today." Shawn agrees and lights up my cigarette.
We're in the middle of an important talk about spring break when Jake comes rushing to us, out of breath.
"What happened?"
"Lyall's beating up Mr. Grey for assaulting Sophia!"
