Chapter 6 - Sleep Is Overrated. So Is Love

"Snap out of it!" Connor said, flicking me in the forehead.

I jerked back, shooting him a glare. "What was that for?"

"It's your turn," he said, pointing to the dart board.

"There was no need to resort to violence," I muttered glumly, touching the damage area.

"Got something on your mind?" Aubrey asked as he brought out a plate of fresh lemon wedges from his kitchen. "You seem preoccupied."

"I got a lot of things in my mind," I answered vaguely. Taking a careful aim, I let the dart fly out of my hand.

I missed, I thought to myself, blowing my full bangs in frustration.

"Not your night, eh?" Connor teased. "Has the guy kissed you yet, Kei? Is that why you're million miles away from us?"

"Screw you, Con," I said, surprised by the fact that he was really on the ticket. Tilting my head at the side, I taunted. "Feel free to hand me your money though and spare us both the effort."

"Today's my lucky day," he replied cockily. "Something's telling me you'll lose."

Feeling a little bit brash, I feigned a shrug and goaded him. "Let's up the ante then, shall we? A thousand bucks says I can hit the center with my eyes closed."

"Getting a little too full of yourself, aren't you?"

"Scared?"

"Hell no," he shot back immediately.

"Then what's stopping you?"

"Keira, you cheat. That's what stopping me," he replied, getting a bottle of Corona from the cooler and stuffing a lemon wedge on its lip. "All you have to do is peek and then you'll win."

I knew he could never back down from a challenge so I gave him a once over. "Okay, you could even blindfold me."

Connor grinned wickedly. "Now, that's more I like it. Prepare to lose, little girl." Turning to Aubrey he said, "Do it."

"And why do I feel like we're doing a porn film?" Aubrey mused, his eyes glistening with amusement.

"You could be on top, bro," Connor said, with a grin. "I'm a very generous guy, you know."

"No thanks. I don't like sharing," I heard Aubrey mutter as he walked towards his room, probably getting a cloth to blindfold me with.

"Make sure it's thick, Aub!" Connor called out at his retreating back.

"You really think that a piece of cloth would stop me from hitting the bullseye?" I chuckled.

"Yeah," Connor said smugly, chugging down his beer. "I mean, you're good but not that good."

I snickered. "We'll see."

When Aubrey returned with a black handkerchief, I positioned myself across the room and faced the dartboard, taking a deep, cleansing breath. As he puts on the blindfold in my eyes, he whispered. "You really think you could do this, Kei?"

"Of course," I whispered back, reassuring him.

With a final tug on the cloth, my sight became dark. I felt Aubrey's presence still standing beside me, squeezing my left hand as he goes and wished me luck.

"You could still eat your words, creampuff," Connor called out, stressing on the derogatory endearment.

I smiled and closed my eyes. Of course there was no way in hell I was gonna miss this. My left hand pretty much remembered where the red dot lies.
