Chapter 15 - My Best Friend And His Love Song
"Glad you're here," I said, letting Aubrey in.He scanned the room warily, probably making sure if Tobie's here. I stifled a chuckle and ushered him forward. "She's at the studio."
He breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank God."
"She's pissed at you, Aub." Grabbing my red purse, I continued, "She really loves you. That girl really did."
Aubrey grunted. "October's a kid. She'll get over it."
"It's not everyday you found someone like her, you know."
"I'll take my chances."
I raised an eyebrow. When Aubrey said that he needed someone who'll be comfortable with as a date for his old man's party, he invited me and said that he'll take care of the rest. Thinking of my daughter's feelings and the fact that I was never good at socializing, I declined his offer and suggested October to come with him instead. After I uttered the words, Aubrey went deadly silent and said that he'll pick me up even if he had to use force.
Yeah. Talk about the rock and a hard place kind of situation.
It took me a couple of hours to tell October about it. When I finally got the courage, she just smiled and said I was acting silly. Being her typical self, she even volunteered to fix my overall getup and bade me to have a good time.
"You look beautiful," Aubrey said as a way of changing the subject, looking appreciatively at the sleeveless, metallic-silver creation that clung to me almost like a second skin. Truth be told, it was kind of unsettling to be wearing a daring dress that completely exposed my back almost to my tailbone. Since I can't very well argue with Aubrey's logic of a well dressed woman, I was just glad that I scrubbed my back clean.
The dress I wore was also partnered with a strappy, silver heels (also care of Aubrey) that made me feel like I'm in danger of doing a massive face plant. Normally, I would've bought something plain but he strongly insisted that I wear this number. Knowing how classy the people in Aubrey's world can be, I grudgingly complied. I didn't want to embarrass him more than I have to.
"That's up for debate," I drawled, looking at his dark gray suit and black collared dress shirt that was left with two buttons undone, revealing his tanned neck. His impressive physique, coupled with his tousled hair and a five o'clock shadow, made him look dangerous and utterly sexy. It was so far from the impeccable taste that he always sported, so it surprised me to see him gorgeously disheveled. It's a strange thing to witness Aubrey's bad boy side coming out to play.
"You look more beautiful than I am, Aub. It'll be hard for me to stave off all the women," I added, sending him a playful wink.
"I'm sure you could manage."
I rolled my eyes at him and was about to reach for my fur shawl, but he got to it first. Like a true gentleman, he motioned for me to turn around so he could put it around my shoulders.
"You don't believe me, do you?" he asked while I was locking the door. "I'm guessing you haven't seen yourself in the mirror."
Smiling at him innocently, I quipped, "Of course, I did. How else would I put some make-up on?"
"You know I don't mean that."
"Then what?" I stopped in mid-stride when I saw him chuckling to himself.
He shook his head. With a faint smile trailing on his lips, he said, "It's hard to believe you have a smart mouth while wearing that dress."
"Well, if it makes you a bit comfortable, I'll let you know that I'm not very much happy with this getup," I said dryly as we entered the elevator. "Seriously Aubrey, the rest of this dress is on the lay-away and that's saying something, because I know I can't even afford to buy the rest even if I earned my next millions."
