CHAPTER SIX
Ok, yes I was feeling very paranoid at the moment but I had a very good reason for feeling that way. I was on my way to the stables to bring Ophelia in for the night. The sky was black, speckled with shiny teardrop like stars, surrounding the king of the night; the moon.
And I heard it. I heard footsteps coming up behind me but when I turned, of course, there was no one to be found. I turned back, shoving my hands into my sweatpants, quickening my pace. Note to self: night time at this school was spooky.
I never once feared the night and I wasn’t really intending on starting to fear it now, but something about this school gave me the creeps, made the hairs on my body stand up straight, and made me look over my shoulders every five seconds.
I was almost to the stables when I heard rustling of grass behind me and I instantly shut my eyes shut, slamming my hands over my ears and dropped to my knees. I wanted everything to go away. To be normal. …What was I thinking? Nothing about my life was normal, but stalking was taking things to the next level.
“Psst! Neo! Are you ok?”
I instantly opened my eyes, looking to the right of me and saw Lia staring at me with worried eyes. “Are you alright? What are you doing out here?”
“Why are you sneaking up on me?” I snapped back, instantly slamming my mouth shut, realizing how harsh my words sounded. What was this school doing to me? I never snapped at people and I have snapped at two already. First Tatum and now Lia. I shook my head. Nothing here was right. Nothing here felt right. No, something felt very wrong.
“I’m sorry?” she said, coming closer to me. “I wasn’t fallowing you, I was sneaking out to see Cameron. He is my boyfriend and his dorm is in the GUYS side of the school.” She pointed in the direction we were both going. “Girls dorm is that way.”
Well didn’t I feel dumb. I ran my fingers through my hair with a sigh and apologized. She accepted. “I’m just going to the stables to bring in my horse.”
That seemed to open way for conversation. She perked up and asked if she could walk with me. It would be harsh to say no, so I just simply nodded with a smile on my face.
“So, you got to choose your horse? That’s exciting!”
Her personality reminded me of Fallen just not so air-headed. So I guess you could call her a better and improved version of Fallen, as mean as that may sound.
“Yea, it really is. And I made the perfect choice.” I said with a smile. The thought of the connection that Ophelia and I shared made me feel safe.
“Oh yea? who’d you choose?” “Ophelia.”
Believe me when I say that she stopped dead in her tracks. Dead. Her eyes were wide and her mouth was wide open. Yea, well I could have guessed her reaction judging by the reaction of all the others that found out. “You’re lying!” she whispered. I shook my head. “I swear I’m not.”
“No one can even get close to that horse. So you have to be lying.”
I grinned just than. “If you keep a distance so she can’t see you, I’ll show you.”
She took me up on that offer, standing far back near the supply stable while I slid into the corral.
The grass brushed my ankles with just a hint of dew wetting the skin of them a cold breeze blew and the smell of alfalfa hit me strong. I whispered Ophelia’s name and she came to me right away. She didn’t run, she didn’t trot or gallop, she just approached me with a lazy walk and shaded eyes. “Hey there, girl.” I stroked her muzzle and she shoved her head against my chest, blowing hot air from her nostrils. I tugged my fingers through her tangled mane. “I’m sorry for what happened earlier. He shouldn’t have treated you that way and I’ll make sure he never does. I’ll make sure no one treats you bad again. I promise on my life Phelia.” She whinnied lightly, lapping the hair that hung on the back of my neck with her lip. I laughed out loud, wrapping my arms around her large neck. “Oh, Ophelia, you are a piece of work. Aren’t you.” She pulled her head away from me and stared me straight in the eye. I smiled weakly, stroking her nose. “What made you so untouchable, Phelia. Who was the cause of your damaged soul.”
