She twists the rings on her finger, the ones made of celestial bronze and woven imperial gold with a ruby center, and the matching ruby-less band. She looked out unto the lake, her heart heavy. One girl had thrown her rings into the sea at nightfall, and mourned till dawn. Another hid her engagement ring in a bunker, in one of the several hundreds of drawers, and prayed that she would forget that he existed. One more kept the engagement ring by a rock in the little river, and the wedding ring, the ashes of the smoldered household in Vancouver. The soon-to-be bride threw the engagement ring into the Grand Canyon, where, two summers ago, he proposed. The woman twisted the ring once more then decided. She would keep the rings, which saved her from a dark place, and the giver of them, saved her from drowning in sorrow, hurt, and brokenness.
