Eden

Ten Days Before

Eden was out of breath from her two mile morning run. Pressing her back against the side of a house, she notices the way various shadows dance with the wind in the moonlight. She notices everything: the single droplet of sweat tracing its way down the back of her neck, the sound of a bird in the distance, her own irregular heartbeat, and... a second pair of footsteps trailing lightly behind her.

That was the first time Eden felt unsafe. She had never been a worrier before - always lived on the edge. She was known as "reckless" and "unpredictable" among her friends. Now her own breathing made her paranoid. She checked behind the shower curtain before she used the restroom and she looked in the backseat of her car before entering the vehicle. Every stranger was potentially stalking her; she always acted like every move made around her was a direct threat. But she was safe. She was fine. Honestly, everything was too normal for her to feel so out of place.
