Chapter one
Don't forget. Those were the words I kept hearing every night for the last week, in my dreams. It was said by a boy. I never saw his face until last night's dream. His face was usually covered by the darkness that surrounded him, but now I saw his face. It was the face of an angel, or so I thought. He had the most piercing green eyes. Once I looked into them, everything went silent and made me feel special. It was like the most real love you could ever find. It was natural and pure. He looked like he had a history; well from the way the scars on his arms glowed you could tell. There was one scar that intrigued me the most. It was where his heart was and the scar was the outline of a heart. The glow was faint but it was still slightly visible. The longer I stared at it, the faster my heart raced. I looked into his eyes again. He was about five feet in front of me when he stopped. He said those words again and disappeared. Right then my alarm woke me up. I slowly opened my eyes, and little by little I saw untamed curls of my step mom, Linda, or Lin as she wants me to call her, come into view.
"What do you want Lin?" I said as I got out of my bed. I looked at my clock. Five a.m. What? I set it to seven last night. Lin. She must be the one responsible for this. "Did you re-set my alarm clock Lin?"
"Well of course honey sugar pie. You need to get ready for your big first day of High School. I bought a new wardrobe for you, and a new set of make-up. I'm gonna doll you all up and your gonna look like Ms. California! Wouldn't that be nice Natasha?" she said in her oh-so-southern way.
"Uh, sure?" I really don't care about clothes. I mean I don't dislike them or love buying it. Just kind of neutral. Good thing I went to bed around eight last night. Even though I did 11 hours of sleep, for the "big day". I would go back to bed, but once I wake up I can't go back to sleep. School started at nine, so I had plenty of time for the big make over. Knowing Lin, she would take forever.
She showed me to my closet, and I saw a bunch of clothes. Even though we just moved in to our new house a week ago, I still haven't had time to unpack any of my old clothes, which were still in my suitcase
I saw Lin pick out a pink tank top, white Bermuda shorts, and blue cardigan.
"Try these on"
I did. And I looked horrible. I shook my head and told her to find something else.
We were on our 10th outfit before I saw something that I liked. It was a dress that was orange and had a little outline of a heart, where my heart should be. It was a nice yellow that went perfect with the dress. It looked like it was almost glowing. I went into the closet and found it hanging in the "dress" section. Yes, Lin named each section. When I put it on, it fit so perfect.
I headed over to the mirror in my closet and took a good look. It looked beautiful on me. My hazel eyes looked more green than brown with this dress and my hair that usually is wavy, was straight. I couldn't recognize myself.
I heard Lin come back to the closet with the clothes that I tried on back on its hangers. She dropped all of it onto the ground. I turned around, and she looked like she's seen a ghost.
"Oh my lord, Natasha, you look absolutely b-e-a-utiful. Where did you find that? Did I buy it? Has your eyes ever been that green? Why is your hair so straight today?..." She kept asking more questions but I tuned her out and went over to the "jewelry" section. The dress needed something. I found one. It was an emerald necklace that was the shape of a flower. It wasn't small, but more medium sized. I put it on and, viola, the outfit was finally complete.
After more complements from Lin, she started on my makeup. I wasn't scared that she would mess up, because she was a very famous makeup artist in California. She's even done some celebrities.
Twenty minutes later and a spritz of Coco Chanel #5, I was finally done.
By the time I went down for breakfast it was six forty eight. I groaned and went into to the pantry for some cereal. I was about to pour some milk into to the bowl when I heard Lin freaking out.
"Oh heavens no child! Put that cereal back and let me make you some breakfast," she said as she went into the fridge and got some food out. I expected her to make hot pockets, but instead she was making a big buffet. While she was cooking an omelet, my cell phone rang. I got up from the table and went back to my room to get my phone. It wasn't a call, it was a text message.
Hey Nat!
I hope your first day of High School will be fun.
Remember! I will be coming home in two weeks.
Love Dad.
I sighed. If only he would be back tomorrow. My dad and I are close. Very close. More close than you would think. I texted him back.
When I got back down stairs, Lin was putting whip cream on two pancakes that were on a plate. On the other plate was a huge omelet.
I sat down and ate. Everything was delicious. Even though the pancakes were made from Bisquick, they tasted phenomenal. I ate everything except one pancake. I thanked Lin and also to show some gratitude, I liked each and every one of my fingers on my right hand. She laughed and so did she.
