Shikamaru killed a rock to the curb. He slightly winced at the sound it made as it hit the cement, disturbing the peace of the night, but at this moment, he could care less.

There is a war going on.

He sighed and continued down the street, a bit eager, but also anxious, about arriving at his destination. He had a date with a woman he had been with for a couple months now. He was a frightened, a new feeling for him, and he was scared at the fact of telling her that he was drafted.

He might not come back and he just didn't have the heart to break it to her.

His hand rashly racked at the rusty door, making an echo go throughout his girl's house. A surge of pleasure shot through his very core seeing his love with her hair messily pinned up, ripped jeans and a worn shirt, an apron on, slightly sweating, a twinge of pink on her cheeks, and bare feet.

She was the epitome of beautiful in his eyes.

She was slightly panting, "Oh. You're late." He almost laughed at the sight of her crossed arms and scolding face. "Why are you late?"

Shikamaru sighed, his happiness slowly draining. "We need to talk Temari."

He watched, silently breaking, as she immediately tensed, her breath catching, and her face a look of hurt. "Come in." She stepped aside and he knew she had one hand on the doorknob to keep her from doing anything rash.

Hell, it took all of his control not to do anything rash himself.

He took the familiar path to sitting room and sat, patiently waiting for her arrival. His legs, hidden by the table, wouldn't stop shaking and his hands were clammy. Shikamaru watched Temari shakenly sit across from him. He knew she was trying to be strong, but he knew that she knew that he was going to be gone the next day. Hell, he had worn his uniform just so he didn't have to say, fulling knowing he was bound to choke up.

His leg stopped shaking as he voice was heard. "Can... Can we just play one more game?" Shikamaru nodded, watching Temari as she slipped out of her chair and almost ran to get the game that had brought them together. She came back her arms full and cleanly dumped the board and pieces upon the table.

"One game. Then I need to go." He knew she heard, but she the only response she gave was the swift tip of her head and the sound of pieces being arranged. He waited patiently as she drew breath, the final piece being placed.

"Would you like to go first?"

Shikamaru sighed, sipping some of the familiar bitter tasting tea that he has grown quite fond of. "What kind of man would I be, if I didn't let the lady go first?"

She made her first move with a shaky hand. "One that stays."

He made no comment to correct her, knowing she was right. If he wasn't a man that followed the rules of society, he wouldn't be signing up for the war. He didn't want to leave Temari, but his pride and self-consciousness didn't allow himself not to. He made his move.

As they played, they both noticed it was a familiar game with familiar moves. It was the exact game the played when they first met.

Shikamaru walked into the chess competition. He didn't really care, but when your mother begins to release the Hulk on you, you do whatever means necessary. He strolled down into the mass of nerd bodies.

Throughout the night, Shikamaru won all of his games easily and quickly. This was annoying and boring and he almost wanted to quit until the image of his mother with that spatula rose in his mind.
