April 27, 1993, West-Plain Manor,
Rockwood, PennsylvaniaIt was raining that day as it had been raining for the past week. Everything seemed to have flooded over. The gloomy day seem to set a somber mood on the recent events that had happened and the ones that would soon take effect.
The Roberts family was outside beyond their maze sitting under the pavilion that covered the training platform. Kalan was drinking a cup of coffee in his rocking chair while his daughter, Mary, stood with her back away from him.
"Mary, you're going to have to get married if we want the plan to go into effect. If you don't, it would look bad on us when others discover. You know humans and their laws of society are more complex now." Kalan said around sips of his beverage.
"But father, I do not wish to marry under these circumstances. I do not like this plan at all." She cupped her hands around her arms shivering slightly while watching the rain fall off the roofing above her head. Kalan sighed. He wished that she was not like this and was more like him instead of her mother. "Mary I do not care for your wishes; we need the child. She is the only way this plan will be completed." Kalan said his voice less gentle, becoming agitated.
"But father, why me? Why must I have the child of your predictions?" Mary did not like her father's plan but she, being beneath his power, could not do anything to stop him. Kalan rose from him chair. He tried to keep his tone gentle and kind but he began to feel irritation. "This child needs to be born to you because no other knows about this plan. Our plan. If the child is to be born of another who knew about the plan, then they might take all the power and we could lose ranks."
Mary shuddered but did not answer him. This was not her plan but his. She did not want to marry anyone and then give away her child upon its age of sixteen. She wished to keep her child and husband when the time came. "How do you know if the child will be female?" She asked.
"I know because all descendants of a male Roberts' is female. Always. As it has been for centuries. You're mother was not a Roberts." He walked over to Mary putting his hand on her shoulder. She did not turn. "May I name the child then?" She asked. "Yes you can name her whatever you want."
"But who should I marry?" She closed her eyes. "Marry that Peter fellow, your friend that you like to hang around with all the time. He will do just fine." Kalan said with nonchalance. Mary snapped open her eyes, both of them widening at her father's choice. She turned to face him. "Why Peter? He is just a friend to me. Just a friend." But she knew why he had made the selection before he answered her.
"Peter has feeling for you. Human feelings are very strong and he is very attached to you. Very attached." Mary sighed. Peter, one of her closest human friends. One she could tell almost anything and not shun her. A trusted friend and now she would have to dishonor him and his feelings by marrying him. She felt sick and dizzy. "But father, Peter is a good human, and friend I do not wish to do this to him," said she in a desperate plea to try and to save him from the dishonored path that he would soon be taking.
"You do not have a choice. You will go and find him and make him ask for your hand. Then the plan shall be set in motion." Kalan turned around away from Mary, smiling darkly.
