Sylvia glanced around the room nervously as she took in her surroundings. All around her kids were talking and laughing about things they did over spring break, while she sat all alone kind of just waiting for someone to notice her. But then again who would want to talk to her? She was different from all the other kids, to them she was weird and a freak. She hung her head in her hands so that she wouldn't have to look at any of them, her shoulders fell heavily as tears began to sting her green eyes.
"Hey, why are you crying?" A voice asked her from behind her. She could tell that it was male just by how oddly deep it was. "You shouldn't be crying, pretty girls shouldn't cry."
Her shoulders rose and fell. She turned her head to see if the boy was still standing next to her, sure enough he was. She noticed that he had black, curly hair that poofed out on top of his head that looked like he had been electrocuted. He smiled down at her sweetly then sat down on the bench next to her. It baffled her mind as to why this boy would want to sit with her.
He sighed and tilted his head towards her, she leaned back confused and slightly frightened by this gesture.
"May I ask what you are doing?" She asked cautiously.
He jolted upright and stared at her with shock and amusement. No doubt he's noticed my accent, Sylvia thought and sighed. This was why people thought I'm weird. People didn't like that her voice was different from theirs, so they pushed her away and said nasty things to her and behind her back.
"Uhm.. It's just that when girls stare at me that usually wanna touch my hair. The guys on the football team hate me for that." He chuckled and brushed his hair out of his face.
His eyes focused on her's making her slightly uncomfortable. She turned her gaze away from his and focused on the food that lay untouched in front of her. "I don't want to touch your hair...?"
"Mathew. Mathew Busek." He said extending his hand to her. She gave him a tight smile and shook his hand.
"What's your name kid?"
"Don't call me a kid." She said sharply. He held up his hands in a surrender motion. She felt momentarily bad for how she had reacted being as all he had done was ask her what her name was. In full honesty she couldn't really blame him for calling her a kid though, she was after all only six years old. Heh six years old and I've got more bite than a unruly pit bull.
"I'm Sylvia Veronique-"
"Damn even your name sounds cool." He smiled widely at her. "Where are you from?"
"I just moved here from Lyon, France." She said quietly. How could he think that she was cool? Nobody else did.
Matt nodded his head slowly, trying to pretend that he knew where that was exactly. "That's cool, why'd you move here out of all other places in the world?"
"My dad was offered a better job." She said simply.
At that moment a two girls walked up to the table and began to talk to Mathew. Sylvia busied herself with packing up her food and book bag.
Mathew noticed Sylvia gathering her things and wondered why it was that she was leaving so soon. Yeah he was a few grades ahead of her, but that didn't mean that he couldn't take her under his wing and look out for her. She seemed like she could use a friend or at least someone to guide her since she just moved here from another country. He reached out and grabbed onto her arm and pulled her back gently.
"Hey why don't you stay for a bit? Here," he said and gestured to the girls that had walked up to him.
One of them was pale with jet black hair, Mathew introduced her as Harper. The other girl was named Vanessa, she had naturally pretty blonde hair, and seemed really into horror movies. Some how she hadn't scared the guys away with that, they seemed really drawn to her because of it.
"Talk to V and Harper for a few, they're good friends of mine." Matt said after making the formal introductions.
"O-okay." She said nervously and glanced over at the girls named Vanessa and Harper. They smiled back at her with genuine smiles.Harper turned to look at Mathew, he was working on his homework from math but every now and then she noticed that he would glance over at Sylvia. She wondered repeatedly what his fascination with her was, she was only a kid so why was he even paying attention to her? She shrugged and turned her attention to Vanessa, who also was giving Sylvia her full undivided attention. Harper sighed and decided that the only way she would get Matt to talk to her now was to speak with Sylvia.
After a while the bell finally rang signaling the students that it was time for the next class to come in for lunch. Harper and Vanessa walked side by side with Sylvia to her next class. Mathew walked behind them as if he was their own personal security guard. When they reached Sylvia's classroom both girls hugged her followed by Mathew, he told her that he would wait for her after school so that she could get to the bus safely. She thanked him then went to take her seat at the back of the classroom. From her seat she could see Mathew's retreating figure walk down the hall until he disappeared around a corner.
"Class!" A short middle aged woman said from the front of the room. "We have a new student all the way from France," she paused to gesture to Sylvia who had slunk down in her seat, "please stand up and introduce yourself."
Sylvia's cheeks flushed a deep red as she stood up slowly and turned to face the rest of the class. Some girls glared at her, and others glared at the boys because they were eyeing up Sylvia. She forced the lump that had formed at the back of her throat so that she could speak. "Uhm I'm Sylvia Veronique and I just moved here from Lyon, France with my family." She said quickly and sat back down. The rest of the day was the same as the morning, all her teachers forced her to introduce herself and the girls in class were rude. She was so thankful when the day was officially over.
Just like he had promised, Matt was waiting outside of Sylvia's classroom to take her to the bus. He leaned up against the opposite wall and shoved his hands in his jean pockets. Shortly Sylvia walked out of the class with her head hung low. Matt pushed off of the wall and reached out to tap her shoulder. Her head jolted up when he touched her shoulder. A small smile spread across her face as she looked up at him.
"How was class?" He asked as he slid past a couple teachers. They both shot him a glare as he tugged Sylvia behind him.
"It was okay." She said with a shrug. Truthfully it was the most horrible thing that she had ever experienced, but she wasn't about to tell him that. He glanced over his shoulder at her and she knew that he didn't believe her, but he kept on walking to the bus.
"Alright kid, this is the bus that'll take you home. Miss Vikki is a sweet lady and if you have any problems just let her know." He told her before turning to head to his own bus. Right as Matt had turn his back to Sylvia he felt tiny arms wrap around his torso. He returned her hug then walked her onto the bus.
Sylvia felt weird for a moment that she had hugged Matt before getting on the bus, but he was so nice to her.Matt waved to her from the front and smiled. Beside him Miss Vikki shook her head at him saying, "Just you watch Mat-ty, dat child gonna be ya date tah prom." Miss Vikki said in her thick Jamaican accent. He smiled at the elderly woman then ran to his bus. On his way there he ran into his friends; George Ragan, Aron Erlichman, Dylan Alvarez, Jorel Decker, and Jordon Terell. They all wondered why Matt had walked a kid to the bus, but they all just shook it off and went to sit at the back in their usual spots. Matt sat next to Dylan, who sat behind Harper and Vanessa.
"Was she okay Matty? I heard even some fourth graders saying some nasty things about her." Vanessa asked the curly haired boy.
He shrugged his shoulders, "She seemed okay, but I know that she's upset about something. She wouldn't tell me though."
Vanessa nodded her head slowly then turned back around in her seat. She felt bad for the little girl and wanted to help her, but then again Vanessa had too much on her hands with worrying about Jorel. He was after all her crush.Later that night after dinner Sylvia shut herself in her room and began to doodle random pictures. The whole night her mind kept wandering back to Mathew and Vanessa. They were both nice people an seemed to truly care about her even though she was younger. Harper on the other hand... Something about her just made Sylvia feel uneasy. But then again she did just meet her so maybe after a few days she'll come to like Harper. She glanced over at her nightstand and saw that her alarm clock read 10:30pm. It was way past her bedtime and if she didn't want to get in trouble she had to go to bed this very second. She sighed and crawled under the blankets and switched off the lights.
