hayes »

the whole team sat quietly in the waiting room. we took up half the seats because of our large amount. coach and i sat at the front because we're closest to her. i already called gabby's parents. neither answered. if they did, how would i tell them? what would i tell them?

the doctor interrupted my thoughts, "gabriella morez?" he called, the whole team standing. "one at a time, coach?" he asked towards my father. "actually, hayes, you go." he said, sitting down. "very well, we'll be back shortly." i sighed following the doctor down the maze of hallways.

the strong smell of cleaners and mediation floated in the air. gross. "how is she?" i asked, before i walked in. "she's a little drowsy from the sleeping medication. just leave her leg alone. we plan on putting the final cast on in a few minutes. that's all the time you have." i nodded, walking into the room.

"h-hayes? hey." she said, weakly. "what- uh- what happened?" she asked. "you got tackled, illegally. he tripped you, you broke your leg. snapped right in half. your bone did a ton of damage to your leg, gab. you lost a lot of blood." i whispered. she nodded. "oh, and you kicked the guy's ass after he hurt you." i added, we both laughed. "i can't even remember that." she said, still smiling.

"well, we leave tomorrow, tonight if possible. whenever you're free to leave. you still gotta get your cast on. we'll have to carry you on the bus." i shrugged. "oh, she'll be out by tonight." the doctor interrupted us. "hayes, is it?" i nodded. "you can stay in here while we put the cast on. it'll just look like wrap. you won't see anything bad." he assured. "okay," i nodded, sitting in the visitor's chair.

"how you holdin' up?" he asked gabby, beginning to wrap a thick white tape around her already casted leg. then, pink tape. im guessing that's what gabby chose.

"alright you're free to go. i have some pain pills you can take if you're ever in pain. if it's a small ache, just rest a bit. it'll heal quicker the more you rest it. ill send some crutches as well. we contacted your parents, and your local hospital for your weekly check ups. you're all set!" he smiled, pushing a wheelchair beside her. i grabbed her and sat her down gently.

if im honest, i remember every moment, and every bit of pain. but i can't let hayes know. the boy that tripped me... he caused a little more than a broken leg.

"when you fell, your helmet must of smashed into the ground, sending dramatic pressure to your skull. it- it cracked, gabby. and there's nothing we can do. that's why you passed out and that's what's causing all the pain. there's a bit of internal bleeding and... we're so sorry, but there's nothing we can do." the doctor said. "w-what'll happen? you know, if it doesn't heal soon?" the doctor shifted. "it might just shut your brain down for a few days, a coma, even death." he said, clearly.

i couldn't let hayes know i could go... in any moment.
