OCTOBER

Sora woke up laughing in October because she'd survived the months before. Ravi was snoring into the nape of her neck, every breath disturbing her hair and making her squirm to escape lest she wake him with her giggling gasps. But Ravi was a bear in his sleep, arms all might for all that they were sweet, his bothered growl more put out than angry. He burrowed his face in her hair and settled. Stretching her legs all the way down to her toes, she hooked an ankle behind his calve and settled, too.

She claimed happiness and contentment for the months to come. Her family would spend quality time together for Halloween and would settle into the end of the year steeped in joy befitting the season.

I have everything I want. She let that peace settle over her and drifted back to sleep.

...

Come lunchtime, Sora looked at Ravi like he'd lost his mind between courses. She nudged her couscous aside to sip from her glass of white.

"You want to dress Tommy up in Red Wings gear?"

"Yeah. Dhiren, too. I've got some extra laying around."

Sora crossed her arms. She'd been to his condo near Misra often. It was a romantic hideaway that doubled as a shrine. "Sure you do."

He narrowed his eyes at her as if trying to read her thoughts. "Don't tell me you're a Blackhawks fan. We may have to break up."

"Don't worry, you'll get used to my team whipping your team's butts just like I whipped yours."

"Say that a little louder and we'll be on the front page." Ravi nodded at a conspicuous diner in the corner.

"They couldn't print a single thing I do to you."

"Damn, I love it when you talk dirty to me. Keep going."

"Well..."

What she had to say-er, whisper-certainly wouldn't be gracing the front page of any respectable publications. She should know, she ran a few.

...

They put the question to their sons during breakfast the next morning.

"What do you wanna be for Halloween?"

Dhiren gave his father's question some thought. "A skeleton!"

"Sounds good. We'll go pick out your costume this weekend, what do you say?"

"Awesome."

Father and son fist bumped their agreement.

"What about you, Tommy, what do you wanna be?" Ravi picked Tommy up off his playmat along with his stuffed duck friend. "What about a duck? You love that thing so much, you wanna dress up as one for a little while? We could trick or treat. Can you quack like a ducky? Say 'quack.'"
