With a gasp, I stopped on my tracks, the bag of Chinese take out that I bought for dinner dangling from my hands. I blinked a couple of times and forced my feet to carry me to the nearest chair and sat, carefully putting my dinner on the table in front of me.
"Hello? Lexi, you still there?" Lia's voice asked me through the phone I am holding to my ear.
"Yes. Just give me a moment to digest your news", I answered distractedly before screaming, "WHAT THE HELL? YOU'RE GETTING MARRIED IN TWO DAYS AND YOU JUST TOLD ME NOW? WHAT KIND OF FRIEND ARE YOU?"
"Oh. Uhm, Lexi you see--"
"AND YOUR GROOM", I continued ignoring her timid interruption. "I DON'T THINK I'VE MET HIM. HELL, I WASN'T EVEN AWARE YOU HAD A NEW BOYFRIEND."
"But Lexi--"
"OH GOD, PLEASE TELL ME IT'S NOT THAT ASSHOLE KEVIN. BECAUSE I SWEAR IF YOU'RE MARRYING HIM I'LL KILL HIM. "
"Lexi, will you just--"
"I MEAN HE CHEATED ON YOU. WITH YOUR SLUTTY BITCH OF A COUSIN, NO LESS. I WILL NEVER FORGIVE HIM FOR THAT. I SWEAR IF I EVEN SEE HIS FACE I'LL--"
"ALEXIS WYATT. SHUT UP!"
That did it. I closed my mouth and smiled apologetically, even when I know she wouldn't see me anyway.
"Oops. I ranted again, didn't I?"
Lia only answered with a laugh, which made me laugh too.
"I'm sorry. I was just so surprised, that's all. I'm really happy for you Lia. I swear", I told her sincerely.
"But", I continued, arching an eyebrow. "I meant what I said about Kevin. So I seriously hope you're not marrying him."
Lia laughed again. "Oh my God, of course not", she replied in an amused voice.
"Who is the lucky bastard then?"
"Bastard",she muttered. "You're sounding just like your brothers."
"Just answer the question Hawthorn", I said, letting impatience color my tone.
"It's uhm...It's Landon. Landon Keene. You do remember him, right?"
An image of a tall man with dark hair and blue eyes looking down at me with barely concealed disinterest flashed through my mind's eye. Even I could admit that he's quite attractive, but I don't think I could spend more than an hour with him.
At least I'm not the one who's marrying him.
I dropped my head on my hands with frustration. "Oh, wow. Landon Keene? Really? That's amazing. Haha", I said in a weak voice.
"You're not even trying to sound happy!" Lia grumbled.
"I don't have to. I'm happy for you, you know that right? I mean, you've always had a crush on him didn't you?"
She sighed. "I did, didn't I? And now he's going to be my husband who would've thought?"
"Yeah, who would've thought?"
We were silent for awhile, before I started talking again, this time calmly.
"Are you sure about this, Lia? Are you really happy about this decision? About him?"
Lia was silent for a little while, making me worry. Then she sighed a small sigh and answered in a low firm voice, "yes, of course. Why wouldn't I?"
