We arrive in Brisbane safely. Jas, Chloe and I grab our luggage from a conveyor belt and walk outside. We hail a taxi and ride together. I call Mum to tell her I arrived safely. I get no answer. Hmm. That's not like Mum. Oh well. She's probably driving. Anyway, we drive to Surfer's Paradise, Gold Coast. I pay the driver and we get out. We walk into the lobby of the hotel. It's 9 on the dot. We walk over to the teachers to get our names signed off. "Good, everyones here." The Year 8 coordinator, Ms Ainsley, says. "Good morning, students. We will assign you your rooms. There will be three students in each room. Here are the rooms: floor one, room A: Austin Geraldson, Campbell Fitzpatrick and Harvey Noll." The three boys walk into the already open elevator. The doors close, and I hear a ding. Ms Ainsley continues reading the names. So far, the Year 8s have already taken up three floors. "Floor three, room C: Emily Willows, Jasmine Ellis and Chloe Mackney." Jas, Chloe and I squeal, hug each other and jump up and down. Then we walk to the elevator. We press a button. The doors open and we walk inside. I press the 3 button then the close one. The doors close with a ding and the elevator rises. There is another ding and the elevator comes to a halt. The doors open and we step outside. Mr Ainsworth is standing there with a bunch of keys. "Hello, girls. What is your room?"
"Room C." Chloe tells him. Mr Ainsworth hands us the key and we find our room. Chloe unlocks the door and we walk in. We find our room. There is a bunk bed on one side of the room, and on the other side, there is a double bed. "Dibs on the double bed!" Jas yells as she runs to the bed. She plonks her suitcase down on it. "You can have the top bunk." I say to Chloe. "Really?" She asks. I nod. "Thanks!" She says. She puts her suitcase at the foot of the bedframe and climbs up the ladder. I lie on my bed. Then I get off. "I'm going to look around." I say. I walk out the room and into the kitchen. There is a note that says:
Hello students,
Welcome to the Gold Coast! Attached is your roster for the next month. We have also provided you with enough food and drinks to last you the whole camp. If you run out, please come and see a teacher. You are to wake up at 7 am each morning, unless otherwise instructed. You will have until 8:30 to have breakfast and make sure you are ready for the day. A teacher will come in at 8 each morning to make sure you're awake.
If you happen to face any problems whilst on this camp, please let a teacher know.
Ms Ainsley
Year 8 coordinator.
Behind the letter is our roster. We are group 3 because that is our floor number. Tomorrow, we are going to Wet 'n Wild (yes!), then the beach, Movie World, beach, Dreamworld, beach then White Water World. Then it is the same roster for the rest of the month. This is going to be a blast!
*the next day*
I run up the stairs for the Aqua Loop. It's not busy. There are 4 people in front of me. Jas and Chloe are waiting at the bottom. They're going to take a picture. The 4 people in front of me were called up. They walked into a tube. The workers closed the class door. After a few seconds, they dropped. I could hear them screaming. I can't wait! The workers call me up. I get into a blue tube. A voice in the tube only I can hear says: "5, 4, 3, 2, 1." Then the floor beneath me drops. Instead of screaming, I laugh. "Whee!" I yell. I feel myself go in a loop. I'm almost at the bottom. I strike a pose, then a huge wave of water splashes me. Jas is holding the camera and laughing. Chloe takes the camera from Jasmine. "Your turn." She says. Jas runs to the stairs.
*huge timeskip*
I walk up the front porch to my house, holding my keys. I had called my family everyday, but they didn't answer. I unlock the door and walk in, closing it behind me. "Hello? Mum? Dad?" I call. The house is dark. "Anyone home?" I call. No answer. I hear the doorbell ring. Is it my family? I rush to the door and answer it. There is a policeman. "Hello, Emily Willows? Daughter of Kendrick and Lana Willows? Sister to Leah, Autumn, Peyton, Bethany, Ayva, Addilyn, Elora, Cordelia and..." He pulls a pice of paper out of his pocket. "Clover?" He asks.
"That's me." I say.
"I need to talk to you. May I please come in?" I step aside. He walks in and sits down. I sit down too. "Emily, I regret to inform you that your family died in a car crash." The police says. No. This can't be happening. They're still alive. They're still alive. Tears brim my eyes. I get up and run, not sure of where I was going. Tears stream down my cheeks, and I let them fall. I end up darting towards the woods.
I stop at the edge of the cliff. I look down. It was a long drop. Enough to kill me. I think about jumping and joining my family. But I hesitate. I look behind me, and I think of the long and happy life my family would want me to live.
So, what should I do? Should I jump, and join my family, or should I go back home, and live a long and happy life?
The choice is yours.
