"Mommy! Where's my other glass slipper?" my young voice called, as my tiny arms emptied my dress-up chest. In my little Cinderella dress and one glass slipper, I hastily searched for the other shoe. My mommy pushed open the door to my play room, smiling softly at my half finished costume. Her short red hair swished across her face as she approached me, her green eyes sparkling mischievously.
"You mean this one?" she asked as a devilish grin spread across her face, my eyes glued to the slipper she pulled out from behind her back. I nodded my head eagerly and reached for the shoe, but mommy pulled it out of my reach. I pouted slightly and Mommy laughed, turning and racing out of the play room.
"Hey! That's not fair!" I squealed and raced after her, bouncing down the stairs and into the living room. Mommy was standing on the couch giggling when my daddy came in holding his cup of coffee and raised an eyebrow at his wife.
"Daddy! She won't let me be Cinderella 'cause she has my glass slipper!" I cried at him, and he chuckled. He put down his cup and swung me onto his back, holding onto my skinny legs as I clutched his neck.
"Attack!" Daddy roared as we lunged towards Mommy who was red faced with laughter. We chased her all the way upstairs into Mommy and Daddy's room, where we tackled her onto the bed. Daddy and I started tickling Mommy until she let go off my slipper to clutch her sides. There were light tears streaming out of her eyes and daddy finally let go of her. I pulled on the other glass slipper and stood up on the bed.
"I'm Cinderella!" I giggled with delight. My mommy and daddy looked at each other before turning to me and pulling me back down onto the bed. Squirming around on the bed as Mommy and Daddy tickled me with their merciless fingers, my tiara fell off the bed and snapped in half. I gasped as actual tears started to escape from my eyes as I stared at my broken crown.
"Hold on Gracie," Mommy murmured as she scooped up the two halves of my crown. Daddy leapt off the bed and dragged Mommy downstairs. I remained on the bed until I heard their footsteps pad back up the stairs. Daddy and Mommy returned with my tiara, which was magically back together.
"You fixed it!" I squealed as I jumped at my parents.
"You bet kiddo," Daddy said as he ruffled my hair. I squealed and pushed his hand away. Mommy kneeled down in front of me, smoothing my hair and placing my tiara back on my head.
"Gracie, you are a princess. You are Cinderella, just without the chores and the suffering. You're just as beautiful, just as special, and you're going to have a loving, handsome prince one day," she whispered to me so Daddy couldn't hear. I threw my arms around her and believed her whole-heartedly.
Oh how was she wrong.
