Chapter 2

Days rolled by. It was now Saturday. I sat alone in my room, like usual. Music blasted through my earphones, entrancing me with the familiar lyrics. I didn't like very many genres. I listened to rock. Sometimes alternative. For some reason, the sound of the two always calmed me, and made me feel as if everything would be okay.

A streak of light filtered through my room, landing on my face from the window. I rolled over on my side, facing my door to see my mother. Her arms were crossed, and she leaned against the door frame. I tugged my buds out of my ears, and stared at her questioningly.

"Dinner." She said bluntly. I nodded, and slid off my bedspread. My room was pretty plain. I had midnight black sheets and covers, a green beanie bag in the corner. A tall lamp next to my bed with a black pole and green lamp shade, and a light wooden desk across the room. I remember when I first decorated the room, I put up little Christmas lights that glowed purple and green along the ceiling. I never ended up taking them down, so now, my room looks a bit like the hulk. I smiled to myself as I jotted downstairs.

My mom was setting the table, in our dinning room. My family was pretty middle-class. We weren't rich, but we did struggle sometimes to make ends meet. My mom smiled her thanks to me after I helped her set the wooden table with our glass china.

"Raymond.." My mother said coldly after we sat down. My father made a grunting noise from his usual position in front of the t.v, behind his computer. Oh how I hated that computer..

        "Yeah?" He replied gruffly.

"It's time to eat." She rolled her eyes as he joined us. The rest of the night ended with the all too familiar silence.

**

"Sky.." My aunt cooed from my right. She licked her raspberry colored lips, when my name escaped them.

I stared up at her, my eyes pleading, mind too naive to understand, heart racing.

"Want to come along with me to the store, hon?" We sat on her porch, located at her cottage in the poppy fields. "We can get some brownie mix to make tonight?.." The wrinkles by her eyes creased as she smiled.

Her chestnut brown hair was swept in the breeze as she rocked quietly in her rocking chair beside mine.

I nodded quickly, wanting to bake brownies before my momma came to pick me up. She stood up, grabbing my hand, and led me to the car. She put me in the backseat, and crawled in after me.

"Auntie? Why are you back here? You have to drive." My S's were lisped because of my missing two front teeth. She put her finger to her lips, shushing me. Her red-pink lips curled up into a smiled as she scooted closer to me.

**

Drenched in sticky, humid droplets of my own sweat, I bolted upright. Tears streamed down my face, soaking into my shirt. I screamed, as loud as I could, wailing, throwing my fists in the air, flailing them all over the place. My sweat mixed with my fear and tears. My room was hot, still, quiet. All you could here was my screams before the sound of running footsteps upstairs.

My door bolted opened, slamming into the wall. My mother.

She crawled into the bed, right next to me, and covered me with her arms. I flinched at her touch, and she soothingly rubbed my back.

"Shhh.. It's okay, Sky.. I'm here," She whispered the words so quietly, I could barely here them over my sobs. I couldn't even speak. I just sat there and let her comfort me. "It's just a bad dream..."

"Just a bad dream.." She repeated over and over.

But I couldn't tell her what I knew. Because it wasn't just a bad dream. It wasn't just a nightmare.

It wasn't a figment of my imagination.

        It wasn't...
