Running out of time

Chapter 4: CDC

When we walk into the CDC there is no one, "Hello?" Rick says "Anybody infected?" a man with a gun asks. "One of our group was, he didn't make it."
Rick said "Why are you here? What do you want?" the man asked. "A chance." Rick said "That's asking an awful lot these days." the man said "I know" Rick said. The man looked around at us "You all submit to a blood test, that's the price of admission." the man said. "We can do that." Rick said. "You go stuff to bring in being it in now, once those doors close they stay closed." the man said. We all rushed out and got our stuff and came back in, once we were all back in the man spoke into a keypad "Vi, seal the main entrance, Kill the lights." "Rick Grimes" Rick told the man his name "Dr. Edwin Jenner." the man said. We got into an elevator it was pretty awkward because there were so many people. "Doctors always go 'round packing heat like that?" Daryl asks Jenner. "With a bunch of these lying around I decided to familiarize myself." Jenner said talking about his gun. "But you all look harmless enough, except you I'm gonna have to keep an eye on you." Jenner said talking to Carl. We get off the elevator and start walking down a long narrow hall. "Are we underground?" Carol asks "Are you claustrophobic?" Jenner asks Carol "A little." Carol answered "Try not to think about it." is all he said. We enter a big room "Vi bring up the lights in the big room." Jenner says, the lights turn on and a room full of computers is revealed. "Welcome to zone 5." Jenner says "Where is everybody? the other doctors, the staff? Rick asks "I'm it, it's just me here. Jenner says "What about the person you were speaking with? Vi?" Lori questions "Vi say hello to our guests tell them...Welcome." Jenner says. "Hello guests, Welcome." Vi says "I'm all that's left. I'm sorry." We all go to get our blood tested "What's the point? If we were infected we'd all be running a fever." Andrea says "I've already broken every rule in the book letting you in here, let me at least be thorough. Jenner explains as he sets down the needle and syringe. "All done" he states Andrea gets up and stumbles. "Are you okay?" Jenner questions "She hasn't eaten in days, none of us have." Jacqui says. Jenner leads us into the dining room and treats us to dinner, everyone is drinking wine except me, Carl even had a bit of wine. It doesn't really bother since I never liked alcohol. I notice Daryl has his arm around Ruby awe they make a cute couple. "It seems to me we haven't properly thanked our host yet." Rick says "He is more than just our host." T-dog says. "Booyah!" Daryl yells "Booyah!" everyone yells. "So when are you gonna tell us what the hell happened here doc?" Shane says making everyone become quiet. "All the other doctors, that are supposed to be figuring out what happened, where are they?" Shane continues. "We're celebrating Shane, you don't need to do this now." Rick tells him. "Woah wait a second this is why we're here, right? This was your move supposed to find all the answers, instead we...we found him, found one man. Why?" Shane questions "Well when things got bad a lot of people just left, went home to be with they're families. and when things got worse, when the military cordon got overrun, the rest bolted." Jenner explained "Every last one?" Shane continues to question. "No, many couldn't face walking out the door, they....opted out. There was a rash of suicides. That was a bad time." Jenner told him "You didn't leave. Why?" Andrea asked "I just kept working, hoping to do some good." Jenner said. "Dude you are such a buzzkill, man." Glenn tells Shane saying what everyone was thinking. Jenner led us down a hallway to show us to our rooms. "Most of the facility is powered down including housing so you'll have to make do here. The couches are comfortable, but there are cots in storage if you'd like. There's a rec room down the hall that you kids might enjoy. Just don't plug in the video games, okay? Or anything that draws power, Same applies... If you shower go easy on the hot water. Jenner said. "Hot water?" Glenn asked excited "That's what the man said." T-dog said eager. We all rush to find a room Ruby rooms with Daryl which doesn't surprise me, Owen and I take the room next to Ruby and Daryl's. I lay my bag down on the couch and sit, exhausted. "You can shower first." Owen tells me. "Okay I'll try and be quick." I tell him I walk into the bathroom stand in front of the mirror, I haven't changed much since the last time I've been in front of a mirror. My red hair is much longer, my face is slimmer dirtier, and my belly is definitely bigger. I try to calculate how far along I am, after a couple minutes of thinking I figure that I'm about 7 months along. "We're running out of time." tell myself my voice barely above a whisper. I turn on the water and strip down I walk into the water and it feels like heaven. I've missed hot showers so much. I quickly scrub myself down and wash my hair trying to get some tangles out with my fingers. After I've been in the shower for awhile I decide that I'm clean enough, and because I realized that Owen is waiting. I dry myself off and change into some sweat pants and a big t-shirt. I walk out of the bathroom and Owen is sitting on the bed reading a book. "Did you check out the rec room?" I ask him sort of startling him He smiles. "Yes, is it my turn now?" he asks. "I guess." I respond. "Alright thank you beautiful." He says giving me a kiss on the lips.

*30 minutes later*
Owen steps out of the bathroom in the same kind of outfit as mine and lays on the cot next to mine. "Brittney?" He suggests "ugh no, you know I hate that name." I tell him "then what?" he asks "Zoey?" I say. "Yeah I like that." he tells me. "Okay." I say with a smile. I lay my head against his chest. "I have a bad feeling about this place." Owen tells me "You're just being paranoid." I tell him as I fall into a dreamless sleep.
