I remember the very first day we met.
We were both six and starting our first day at school. He was wearing his green Norwest Christian College uniform that looked much too big for him. Same as me. We entered the classroom at the same time, and the teacher introduced herself as Miss Cameron. We tried to find our names on the desks. I watched him as he searched the desks for his name. I quickly scanned the room for my name and found Emily Walker in the middle of the second row.
I looked at the desks both sides of me. Aleisha McDonald on my left and Michael Clifford on my right. I looked at the boy in his too big uniform that made his blonde hair stand out. He could be a Michael right?
My heart started beating faster as he walked over to the desk next to mine. The butterflies in my stomach were flying around like there was no tomorrow. He looked down at the name tag

And walked away. My heart sank. So he wasn't Michael. I watched him as he finally found his seat directly in front of mine. He wasn't next to me, but he was still pretty close. My first crush was sat between two girls who just ignored him. I wouldn't have ignored him if he was sitting next to me.

I looked to my left and 'Aleisha' had sat down next to me. She smiled at me and mumbled a barely audible "hi" before looking down at her desk. I smiled and looked at the empty seat to my right. Everyone had taken their seats and there was no sign of 'Michael'.

The teacher had just started talking but I wasn't really paying attention. All I could focus on was the hair of the cute blonde boy seated in front of me. Hearing my name was the only thing that snapped me out of my trance. I looked up.
"Sorry?" I mumbled. I hadn't heard a word she just said. She started to repeat herself when he turned around and looked at me. His blue eyes pierced mine and I completely stopped listening as I stared into his crystal eyes.
"... then what would I get?"
I snapped my eyes back to the teacher. "Oh um uh-"
I was saved by the door swinging open and a boy with really long hair and a kinda rebellious look on his face walked in. His green shirt wasn't tucked in and he wasn't even wearing socks.
"Michael Clifford?" Miss Cameron looked him up and down and sighed.
"Yep."
I smirked, he was funny.
"Take your seat please Michael. You're next to Emily."
"Who?"
She pointed at me and I blushed.
Michael walked behind Aleisha and I and slumped into the seat next to me. I gave him a shy smile but he didn't look at me.
"Alright class, writing books and pencils out." Miss Cameron clapped her hands to get the attention of the class.
I reached into my tidy tray and pulled out my kitten covered writing book and clearly named pencil out of my pink butterfly pencil case.
The boy in front reached into his tidy tray and whispered a quiet "oh no." Even though I could barely him, even his voice sounded perfect. But then he turned around and looked at me.
"Um, Emily right?" His voice, his eyes, his slightly chubby cheeks, the way he said my name... everything about him was cute. I realised he asked me a question and nodded.
"Can I borrow a pencil please? I forgot mine at home."
"I, uh yeah." I never had a problem talking but I could not speak to this boy. So I just pulled out another clearly labelled pencil out of my pencil case and handed it to him. I barely heard him say thanks because all I could think about was that he had my pencil. He could have asked anyone for a pencil but he asked me.
I don't really remember what happened that lesson, because all I could watch was the way his hand moved while holding my pencil. The bell rang for morning tea and I watched him put my pencil in his tray. I was going to say something, but I let him keep my pencil. My named pencil was now his.
When we were dismissed I got up and leaned forward to see the name tag on his desk.
Luke Hemmings.
I smiled and followed Luke out of the classroom.
And that was the day I fell in love with Luke Hemmings.
