In Dimension 49, there is a loud, bustling city in Japan west of Tokyo. The city mostly consisted of children and teenagers, which would be considered strange to most. However, in Academy City, it was perfectly normal.

Academy City was around a third of the size of Tokyo, and was so technologically advanced, the technology itself was said to be thirty years ahead of the rest of the world.

Academy City was an independent city, not being subject to the Japanese Government, or any other government besides the Administrator Aleister Crowley.

However, this and the technology was not what made this city so special and unique that people from across the globe flocked to it.

It was the power development course.

The course used a wide variety of drugs and suggestive mind tricks to turn many students of Academy City into Espers.

Espers were physics, that had trained their mind to develop superpowers.

There was a multitude of Esper abilities... pyrokinesis, electrokinesis, teleportation, mind control...

The Espers were ranked from 0 to 6. Level 0s were those who had failed to develop any sort of power at all, while Level 5s were the most powerful espers in the city, who could take out the entire Japanese Army without breaking a sweat. And Level 6.. well.. let's not even go there...

The third most powerful Level 5 was standing by a bridge, drinking a can of soda. The girl had shoulder length chestnut hair and a fancy looking school uniform.

Mikoto Misaka was humming to herself as she looked at the vast expanse of water. She sighed, realizing that she had better head back to the dorm before her roommate had time to plan a very uncomfortable ambush.

Mikoto turned around, and realized that there was a group of leather clad college aged thugs surrounding her.

"Hehehe... hey you, sweetcheeks!" one called with a surly grin.

"You wanna come over?" Another asked.

"Yeah, I made my bed all special!"

"We can take you back to you dorm, can't say how late though... hehehe..."

Mikoto gave them all a blank stare, and took a long sip of her soda. She stretched her arms over her head, before simply saying, "No."

The thugs' eyes widened in outrage.
