I slowly reach for it and sit down on the bed, and I turn the first page;
"Diary from Jayson Darkwood"
"Day 1 - Today I met the most beautiful girl. Her name is Serena Roosa. She's one of us."
"I was on the road today, with a lovely sun high at the sky, the scent of spring in my nose and the birds singing lustily. In what felt like a second, the sky turned pitch-dark with big heavy clouds full of rain which fell down only seconds after.
And there she was. Crying, in shock, stumbling, covered in blood and dirt. She was standing at the side of the road, unable to walk any further. I stopped the car and carefully walked over to her. Once she saw me, she stumbled on the ground and screamed. "Go away! Please go away, I'll hurt you! I don't know what is happening to me, I don't know what is happening to me..!" The look in her eyes, it was terrifying, so anxious, helpless, scared, sad.
I tried to calm her but it didn't work, which was really weird, because I've never failed to control someone's emotions. She kept screaming that she could hurt me, that she didn't know what was going on, that something was wrong with her. Eventually she was exhausted, all the energy in her body gone, she fell and I could only just catch her before her head hit the ground.
I couldn't leave her. Even if I wanted to like I always do, I just couldn't. Something about this girl was so beautiful, even if she was at her worst. Her eyes were so wonderful, pure and warm, and beneath all the dirt and blood, she had an olive skin which seemed so vulnerable and light. But there's something inside of me which sees also the beauty inside. She was so scared, lost, and she knew she needed help, but still rejected it because she didn't want me to get hurt, even though she didn't even know me.
I took a blanket out of my car and I wrapped it around her. When I touched her, a warm feeling went through my body, as if I sat by a roaring log fire on a cold day. While I drove to the house I watched her sleep.
God, she's so beautiful.
She has a few cute freckles on her cheeks and one dimple.
I couldn't stop thinking about what had happened to her. My first thought was that she would be one of us, but with all the people I know and heard about, it all went slowly, our powers steadily growing stronger. But she was so afraid, as if suddenly her powers came to her at once and overwhelmed her. At least, if that's what she has; powers like us. It could also be something else, that she was afraid or in shock of something she had seen. But something told me she was special.
When we arrived at the house, Michael was already outside because he had heard the car from miles away and could tell if something was wrong.
"You are right Jayson. She is one of us, and she is special. Her name is Serena Roosa," he said. I still didn't know how to feel about her, so I asked "Special in a good or a bad way?"
His voice felt like a knife in my heart. "Both."
