Merle did a brief stint in the Navy right out of high school but got kicked out for punching his commanding officer. In an unfortunate incident involving an Atlanta rooftop, a pair of handcuffs, and a drug deal gone horribly wrong, Merle was forced to cut off his own hand and go on the run. He ended up working for a local entrepreneur.
