“Hey Squinty! The suns not that bright you can open your eyes.” David called. He was always teasing me, never letting it go, because I’m different. “Come on Squinty, the dogs aren’t cold yet, still plenty of time to eat.
“My name isn’t Squinty, its Meing.” I said quietly, praying he would leave me alone. Please oh please leave me alone, I begged silently.
“Hey everyone, Squinty talked about something that didn’t involve school.” He said calling attention to me trying to go to class. The crowd of people started laughing and chanting “Squinty! Squinty!” looks like another horrible day. Today was my seventh day at a new school and I found out instantly that I was the only Asian here. Not a single person here was Asian. I know weird so these people thought I just came from Asia which in fact I have never before been there.
I was originally born in Dallas, Texas, but my mom decided it was time to move. To move away from all of my friends, from everything that was good for a stupid job offer. When I moved here I saw that the neighborhood had a nice look about it. Kind of like where it’s so safe you can leave you door unlocked while you’re gone. But that appearance disappeared the day after school ended. David Taylor was the first person to talk to me. I had asked for him to point me towards the office so I could get my schedule and he pointed in the wrong direction making me get in trouble on my first day.
But what really ruined the peaceful neighborhood was that David lived next door to me. His bedroom window was right next to mine. He came up with a name for me after he found out I was going to be riding the bus home with him. He started calling me Squinty. Most people had been nice to me on my first two days, but when David decided to make fun of me everyone followed. I kind of figured he was the school bully, the way some people seemed to follow his every command.
“Squinty it’s not nice to stare. I know I’m good looking and everything but you just don’t do it for me.” He said. The hallway burst into laughter and as I walked faster I was tripped by cheerleader. I grabbed the first thing in my reach which so happened to be said cheerleader. Her skirt belt kind of thing went up to show a pink frilly thong. She jumped up and pulled me up by my hair.
“You effin bitch! You will regret this.” She screeched in my face.
“Hey now, is there a problem?” Mr. Lent called coming up to our little scuffle.
“No Mr. Lent. I was just helping ….” She trailed off trying to remember my name.
“Meing.” Mr. Lent offered helpfully. The cheerleader nodded like a stupid bobble head. “Okay, that was nice of you but next time do it in the proper way. Helping someone up does not call for you to pull them up by their hair. Come with me to the office to talk to the principal. I’m sure she would be interested in your helpfulness. Meing go ahead and come with us.” He said holding out a hand to help me off the ground from where the girl had dropped me.
“Were you fighting in school?” Mrs. Hendrix asked.
“No ma’am I was helping her up.” The girl said.
