I walked down the street humming some tune that had gotten stuck in my head earlier, I was on my way to the DX to see Sodapop, I smile at the thought of him. We're not dating, I doubt he even thinks of me like that, he only sees me as a close friend. Everyone in the gang knows that I like him though, once Two-bit found out he told everyone, Two-bit's like an older brother to me, our parents are the bestest of friends so we always had to hang out when we were little which wasn't too bad. I walk up to the door and see Soda wiping down the counter, he looks up and smiles when he sees me, I grin as well then waltz into the building. "Well if it isn't Liz Robinson" he picks me up and spins me around "How ya doin sweetheart, haven't seen you in a while" he grins at me then sets me down "You just saw me like yesterday" I giggle, he walks back around the counter and continues to wipe it down "That's a long amount of time" he winks at me, I roll my eyes playfully, what a flirt.
Steve walks in holding the mail and hands two letters to Soda then smiles at me "Hey Liz" he tries to give me a hug but I push him off because he has oil on his hands, he looks confused for a second then looks at his hands then smirks. "Oh what? Afraid of a little oil?" he snickers then lunges at me, I giggle then run away but he catches up to me and ruffles my hair. I huff then try to fix my hair, I hear a tearing sound so I look up at Soda to see him tearing up the letter he got, he throws it in the trash then looks up at Steve and I "Soda are you okay?" Steve asks. Sodapop shakes his head then starts walking to the door "Steve can you cover for me?" but Soda doesn't give him time to answer before he opens the door, I reach out and grab his arm but he looks back at me and shrugs it off then dashes down the street.
I watch him run until he's out of site then look back at Steve "What do you think the letter said?" I ask and he shrugs, I walk behind the counter and pick up the letter out of the trash "Isn't that illegal?" Steve asks hesitantly "Since when do you care if what we do is legal or not?" "True, just don't get caught" he walks back into the garage leaving me alone. I unfold the pieces then set them on the counter and put them side by side, the letter's from Sandy, Sodapops girlfriend. Dear Sodapop, I don't mean to break your heart but there's no other way I can put this, I won't marry you. I've found someone else, someone that can support me, we moved to Florida so that I don't have to see your face everyday and regret everything. I wish you happiness. From, Sandy.
Ouch. Steve walks back into the room "What did it say?" I slide the letter to him and he reads it then his face dropped, "He proposed?" I nod as shocked as he is. "He didn't tell anyone he was going to, oh geez Liz I'm so sorry" I shake him off "It doesn't matter anymore, he's the one who's hurting more" I grab the letter then crumple it up and throw it in the trash. "Should we tell him that we read the letter?" I ask "Probably not, he might get mad at us for snooping" I sigh then rest my chin on my hand, "We have to help him somehow" I say and Steve nods, "Maybe he just needs time" Steve suggests "Maybe" I sigh then look at the street where Soda just was, Steve sighs then grabs my hand "C'mon, lets get your mind off him for a while" he smiles at me sweetly so I agree. I spent the rest of the day fixing cars with Steve and joking around with him.
Steve and I have been through a lot, every break-up he's ever had I've helped him through it and he's done the same for me, we've been best-friends for 11 years now so he's practically my brother, we're walking down to the Curtis house per usual. Steve was being a lot more affectionate than usual, but I just kinda brushed it off. We opened the front door and everyone cheerfully greeted us except for Soda, he was sitting at the kitchen table smoking a cigarette, everyone noticed that I was staring at him so Pony whispered to me "He's been sitting like that for a long time now" I bit my lip then started to walk over to him. I hear Steve sigh behind me but I ignore him, I sit down next to Soda and he takes a glance at me but then returns his attention back to the window. "Hey Sodapop" I say quietly, he doesn't say anything, "are you okay?" I ask but he still ignores me. His cigarette runs out so he throws the remains at the wall, "I'm going on a walk" he stands up abruptly and starts to walk to the door "Hold up little buddy, did you check the time? It's dangerous to go out now alone" he shrugs "I'll go with him" Sodapop gives me a sideways glance but still doesn't say anything. I follow him outside and we start walking down the street in silence.
