You miss her. It's only been a month, if that, but you can't seem to get her out of your mind. You think it's always been like that, but before at least you knew you could find her if you took a nightly stroll, just the two of you under the moon and starlight. Here, no matter how far you walk, you'll never see her, unless you want to try and cross an ocean on foot. It's slightly lonely. America isn't, of course. There's plenty to do and see, and every day is another adventure. You've been having a blast! But...
A sigh escapes you, lost in thought, finger hovering over the messaging app on your phone. Tapping the icon brings you right to your most recent contact, and colored bubbles drift down the screen full of daily thoughts and expressions of affection. Rather than it being a comfort, though, you feel a twinge of loneliness somewhere inside you. You shouldn't, she must be busy—countless excuses raid your mind. You glance out the window.
Moonlight filters pale and milky through the curtains, and you can hear the cooing of evening bugs. You might be under the same sky, but as the curtain closes on your day, it opens on hers, sometime far in the future. Needless to say, the time difference has been your biggest challenge. It must be 10 or 11am back home; you can just picture her, out and about doing whatever project she's working on now. No longer in uniform, maybe, but just as dedicated as ever. She really is incredible.
A light jingle jolts you out of your thoughts, and you nearly fall back in surprise, foot sliding back to catch you. A call? From who, at this hour? As soon as you see the name, your mood soars. "Mizuki-san!" You're sure your excitement comes through in your voice, cheeks rosy and smile stretching from ear to ear. "I was just thinking of calling you. Aren't you busy?"
You may not be able to see her face, but you can feel her smile through the phone. "No more than usual, and I wanted to talk to you." Her voice is smooth against your ears, and your face heats up a bit. To think that you'd thought of each other at the same time! It's almost like something out of a movie.
Deciding you might as well be honest, since she's your girlfriend after all (though it's still sort of embarrassing to say), you open up. "I really miss you. I keep thinking that I want to see you, but then I can't. I don't regret coming to America, but..." Any further words sink in your throat, and all you can think is how glad you are to be able to speak with her like this, even thousands of miles apart.
"Ichigo." Your heart skips a beat as she says your name, gently, tenderly. Sometimes you can't believe how lucky you are. "Look outside. You can see the moon overhead, right? Whenever you see the moon high in the sky, I'm with you. And as for me..." A brief pause; you imagine her lifting back the curtains for a moment. "I have my sun right here."
A swell of some odd joy fills you, knowing that you're in her thoughts even now, and you find that you don't feel so lonely anymore. Mizuki-san thinking of you, Mizuki-san missing you as much as you miss her, forever the moon in your sky and your guiding light. The words that leave your lips next are entirely natural and obvious. "I love you."
The phone shifts, as if she's trying to hide her smile.
"I love you too."
