**Ridge**
Going through the school is a drag. Too many cheerful people. Who the fuck would be so cheerful in school? Honestly, I swear some of the people here are drugged in order to be this happy.
Some laughing humans bump into me causing my book to fall to the ground. I bite my tongue as to not lash out at the idiots as a growl slips out of my throat. My best friend, and soon to be Alpha, James, looks at me with concern filling his features. He bends over and picks up my French II book and hands it to me.
"You okay, Ridge? You've been in a mood all day," James says.
I bite back my growl and take my book from him, I would most likely get a punch in my face if I growled at James, even if he is my best friend.
"I'm just not in the mood for school today. I can't stand how happy all these people are," I say as I follow James to the cafeteria for lunch.
James raises an eyebrow before getting in the line for food. The line moves slowly as we wait for the lunch ladies to drop whatever they have "cooked" for us onto the plastic trays. I hate school lunch.
"Man," James says as I glare at the slow lunch ladies. "Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed," He chuckles to himself.
I turn my glare to him. "I just need to go for a run," I mumble as an excuse. I probably do need to go for a run actually.
James nods his head as we finally pick up our trays to get filled with food. The lunch ladies plop down mashed potatoes, chicken sandwiches, and a pile of mushy cooked carrots and green beans onto our trays. I grimace at the cooked vegetables as I grab an Apple from the bowl at the cash register and a bottle of water. James and I both pay with credit cards before taking our trays to our usual spot by the Exit.
I drop my tray down and slide into the hard plastic chair. I unscrew the lid off of my water and gulp down half of it.
"So," James says as he picks at his mashed potatoes with his fork. "Any luck?" I keep my eyes on my tray of unappetizing food. I know what James is talking about, kind of a sore subject for both of us really.
"Nope," I grumble.
"I've decided I will go after Christmas," James says quietly. I snap my attention up to him completely now.
"You are?"
"Yeah, you're welcome to come with me. I'm sure I'd need a friend in the process,"
I nod my head in agreement. "At this rate I will," I grumble. "We can't fill our positions without them,"
James nibbles on a forkful of potatoes. "Technically we could, we would just have to choose,"
"I don't feel comfortable choosing some random person when I know my other half is still out there,"
"I know what you mean," He almost growls. He looks around the cafeteria at all the other werewolves in our pack who have already found their mates. It's a sad boring life without your other half.
Werewolves can find their other half as soon as there first shift, which for most is fifteen. I shifted at ten since I have Beta blood in me, while James shifted at seven. Some were's are lucky and find their mates at fifteen when they shift, others have to wait many years.
James and I are unlucky guys. We are already almost eighteen and have yet to find our mates. In order for James to become Alpha and me to become his Beta, we both have to have our mates, or someone to take their place. The Alpha needs a Luna, while I need someone to reproduce with for the next line of Beta's.
James has been talking about dropping school and doing it online so he can travel to hopefully find his mate. He is supposed to become Alpha after he graduates and wants his true mate by his side, not some slut who only wants to be Luna.
I want my true mate by my side as well. I don't even date with the knowledge of having a mate waiting for me somewhere out there in the world. I mean there have been plenty of offers to date, plenty of one night stands I could have had; but I refused them all. I want my first everything to be with my mate.
"I plan on leaving on the twenty-sixth, you can come with me if you want, Ridge," James says, pulling me out of my depressing thoughts on not having my mate yet. "That gives you two months to decide, but when I'm gone, I'm gone. I don't plan on coming back until I find my mate, or I am forced back."
I nod my head in understanding. "I probably will, James. I refuse to pick someone when she's out there already."
The bell rings for fifth period. I look down at my untouched food with a grimace. I grab my Apple off the tray and dump the rest in the trash. I will most likely starve later now that I skipped lunch.
"Have fun in French," James laughs to lighten the mood.
I glare at him playfully. James knows I hate the fat French teacher with a passion. The teacher hates me as well but who gives a shit. The teacher is human so he doesn't know what I could do to him by barely lifting a finger. He hates me because I already know French like it was my first language. I was only put in that class so I had something to do that hour.
