"Come on, it's going to be so much fun!" Connor pleaded. "I think it's going to do good for the both of us."
"I don't know Connor," I hesitated.
Connor had put the idea of us going on a road trip in his head and he had tried all morning to convince me to come with. I wasn't very fund of the idea of leaving the apartment alone.
"It'll be great! We can make out in my car, watch the sunset, watch the stars on a blanket. It'll be just the two of us. No one else to bother us. Being away from all the problems and worries will do us good, I'm sure!" Connor tried to persuade me and I got to admit that it did sound tempting. But I still wasn't entirely convinced.
"Please? For me?" Connor tried and looked at me as he pouted.
I gave up. "Okay, okay, fine, we can go!" I threw my hands in the air as a sign of surrender.
"Yes! I knew I could convince you!" Connor yelled as he picked me up and twirled me around. I laughed with him. I couldn't help it, if he was happy, so was I.
"Wanna know where we're going?" He whispered in my ear.
"Yes!"
"San Diego."
"What are you doing here?" He growled. "I thought I'd never see you again."
"Believe me, I thought so too," I answered. "But circumstances can change and here I am."
Although I tried to make sure I sounded confident. I couldn't forget the events that happened when we last met. Alec was one of Connor's clients. He often bought drugs and from the looks of it, I was convinved that he was very addicted. It made him violent and impulsive. I'd learned that you needed to be careful with what you say to him. One wrong word and his personality immediately changes.
One day, as Connor selled his drugs, Alec hit him in the face. He claimed that the drugs Connor had given him weren't strong enough. He said they hadn't had the effect he desired. He threatened Connor and wanted his money back. From that day on, Connor refused to sell any more drugs to Alec, which pissed him off even more.
"Who's the guy who looks like he's being tormented by demons?" Alec interrupted my thoughts.
I looked behind me and realized he's talking about Jay. I laugh when I notice his face expression. He really looks out of place here.
"That's Jay, my neighbor."
Alec didn't seem very interested in Jay and shifted his attention back to me.
"So what brings you back in San Diego?"
"I was hoping we could discuss that somewhere private," I said as my gaze shifted towards to two men standing behind Alec. I recognized neither of them.
"Alright, follow me." Alec gestured towards a door, which I assumed led to his place.
I turned around once I heard footsteps following me from behind.
"What are you doing?" I asked Jayden.
"I'm coming with you!"
"No, you are not. I told you that you wouldn't be a part of what I am about to do, which includes talking to Alec," I explained once again.
"I don't trust them," he declared.
"Then trust me," I said and turned around to follow Alec before he could answer again.
"Make yourself at home," Alec said as I entered his place. I seated myself at the sofa in front of him. "I must admit that I'm curious to know the reason for your visit."
"I don't know if you've heard, but Connor was murdered," I said while trying hard not to show any emotion. Alec's rules were simple; emotions only made you weak.
He did looked at me with a perplexed expression across his face. He didn't see that one coming, that was obvious.
"No, I didn't hear. But I still don't know what that has to do with me," Alec said.
"Patience, I'm about to explain," I said a little irritated because of his impatience. "You were a good customer of us, until you know," I hesitated," anyway, you know a lot of Connor's friends and clients, so I thought you might be able to help me find his killer and get the revenge I deserve."
Alec frowned as I talked about Connor's killer.
"You haven't cached him?" he asked eventually.
"No, obviously not, otherwise I wouldn't be here," I said, trying to remain calm.
"Because Connor was a great friend to me before you know, I'm prepared to help you. Although I didn't like the guy, I wouldn't want him dead," Alec said and his answer made me sigh in relief. He'd help, I wasn't alone anymore in this quest. "But on one condition," he added and I nodded, encouraging him to go on, "I want to take over his drug business."
"You what?!" I couldn't believe this, after everything that was taken away from me, Alec wanted to take over our business too? Mine and Connor's business? The only actual link I still had to Connor? But on the other hand, I really needed his help. Was our business worth sacraficing? Was my revenge worth it?
