"Volleyball fishezzz!" Marissa yelled as she ran down the shore with a ball in her hands.
"Was that supposed to be some sort of sugarcoated version of a bad word?" Percy said, glaring at her as he and the others walked towards the net set up not too far from where we were.
Nico and I were sitting on a blanket under the shade of a tree, drinking orange juice and watching the waves crash against the shore. I know, it sounds cliché but it was actually pretty sweet.
"So?" Nico asked. "What's the plan?"
"The plan, as of right now," I said as I laid my head down on his lap, "is to relax."
"It's been a while since you experienced something as chill as this, huh?" he asked, laughing.
"Yup. I went blind twice, Nico. The dark is starting to scare me."
"Yeah, I know how you feel..."
I let out a sigh.
"Kind of ironic, don't you think?" I asked and the two of us laughed. I mean seriously. I was basically the baddest demigod biatch out there and Nico's the son of freaking Hades and yet we were weakened by darkness. Well, Nico's case was much worse than mine, but still.
"Oh stop worrying about it already," Nico said, leaning over and giving me a hug. I couldn't help but laugh.
"I love you," he whispered in my ear.
"I love you too," I said with a smile, giving him a kiss on the cheek.
"Yo! Love birds!" Percy yelled. "Get your asses over here and let's play!"
"You go ahead," Nico said.
"Alright, if you insist," I said, laughing. I ran off and an intense game of volleyball ensued. Let's just say I beat their asses single-handedly.
"Dammit," Marissa said, wiping the sweat off her forehead. "I hate how good you are."
"Even after getting paralyzed, you're still in shape!" Leo complained. "That's not fair! You're younger than us and you didn't go through any major quest or whatever but dammit! How the fudge are you so good!"
"Flattery won't get you anywhere," I said.
"But it might get me some cake," he said, wiggling his eyebrows up and down.
"Oh yes! Please!" Annabeth pleaded.
"Yeah, dude, whip up some of those pastries!" Jason joined.
"What the hell is it with you guys and the stuff I cook?" I asked. They looked at me as if I asked the dumbest question on earth.
"IT'S FREAKING DELICIOUS!" Marissa yelled. I rolled my eyes and let out a sigh.
"Alright, alright," I said. "I'll go make some right now."
"I'll help," said Nico, walking up to us.
__
"You have to sift the flour, genius," I said, laughing as Nico was slowly making the cookie batter.
"Why the hell do I have to do that?" he asked, raising a brow as I handed him a sifter.
"To get rid of the chunks to make life easier," I answered. He rolled his eyes and did what he was told while I proceeded to make cupcakes.
"MARISSA!" I heard Percy yell from outside. My heart dropped along with the whisk I had in hand. I looked at Nico and he had the same look on his face that I had.
"No..." I muttered. We quickly ran out to the beach where the gang was and saw nothing but smoke. I coughed as I inhaled the smoke, frantically searching for Marissa.
"WHAT HAPPENED?" I yelled at Percy who was on his knees, punching the sand. Annabeth was running around the beach, looking frustrated, along with the other people. "PERCY, TELL ME WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED! WHERE'S MARISSA!"
"I don't know.." was all he muttered.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T KNOW!" I yelled, grabbing him by the shoulders as I shook him. He looked up and looked me in the eyes. Despair... "Oh gods no, please..."
"She's gone," Annabeth said, running back to us.
"No, please, no," I said.
I sat on the sand and felt the world crumble around me.
She's gone?
Marissa's gone?
"Crista?" Nico gently whispered.
"CRISTA!"
That was the last thing I heard until everything went black.
