Chapter 12: Recovery

I knew she looked familiar.. she was that young vibrant girl I met in the rose garden when I was a child.. since my mother was often kept in the mansion, I hardly left her sight..

however it was that in faithful day I met a young girl in the garden.

"Hey." I spoke flately

"Woah! You startled me there! Are you a vampire or a ghost?" The girl giggled as she patted the back of her pants to sweep dust and soil off her pants.

"A vampire. What are you doing here? Who are you? What do you want with the garden?" I questioned the intruder.

She had completely ignored me. She continued to gaze at the white roses in the garden and took a whiff of their fragrance.

"Wow! These smell lovely! How do you bleach the roses anyway?" She poked one while asking. I raised a brow, this girl had an attention spam of a toddler..yet oddly enough, she seemed friendly. For a human girl.

"Okay I'll answer your questions. If you play a game with me!" She poked my nose while I was still deep in thought. I stumbled backwards at that sudden contact while blushing. No girl had ever touched me before, she was the first (and only) girl to have touched me..

"Whats the game?"

"Hide. And. Seek! I'm a master at this game so be warned!" She grinned like a chersire cat while winking at me.

I searched high and low, every shrub, bush and even the fountain. She had completely vanished. just as I was about to give up, I heard snickering from the trees. I took a fallen tree branch and poked the owner of the giggling. A smirk was on my face when the girl had successfully fallen out of the tree and landed on her behind yet again.

"You are good.. too good.. my poor tushie!" She rubbed her sore behind while laughing a melodious laugh.

"You win, I'll answer all your questions so listen up!" She placed her hands on her hips and jumped onto a large boulder.

"Mummy loves roses, but they all look the same. Well they're all red, I saw this garden full of white roses and I climbed that tree over there!" She pointed to an old oak tree opposite the walls.

"I wanted to surprise her cause.. she's been cooped up in the castle for too long!" The girl pouted, for some reason my dead heart began to beat.

"Your n..?" I can barely hide the fact that I'm stuttering.

"what's your name?" The girl asked, beating me to the point.

"I asked first"

"I asked second. Boys first!" The girl stuck out her tounge while making ridiculous faces at me.

"Subaru. And yours?"

"Anzai! Nice to meet you!" She grabbed my hand gently and shook it. I've never felt this sort of warmth before, I've always been thought as a Lowlife, a piece of discarded trash.. yet she saw something in me..

Embarrassed, I withdrew my hand while my face was as red as a lobster. But what would my 'father' say if he catches me with a human?

"Anzai, you need to go. Father doesn't like humans in the castle.." I pushed her towards the gate when she came to a halt.

"Hey! Who said anything about me being a human? See?" She opened her mouth and used her index finger to stretch one side of her mouth while her other finger pointed at the fangs.

"See? I'm a vampire too!" She smiled back, for some reason, she was sparkling in my eyes.. it was as though she was an angel.

"Uh oh.. mummy is going to kill me if I don't get back on time.. can we hang out again? I'll climb that oak tree to see you again!" She waved goodbye to me before leaping over the wall, it was then when I placed my palm on my cheek, for some reason; it felt warm...

Reiji was the first to push open the wooden door to check on anzai. "Anzai, are you feeling better?" Yui popped the question as she poked her head into the room.
