Chapter 1

Shizuka POV

The night sky was clear and the wind blew swiftly across the flowing stream as moonlight danced across the dirt road. The clicking of horse hooves seem to vibrate threw the air as my hay cart rode silently across the road. Delivering hay wasn't the best job on the market but when your an orphan with a little sister to take care of, you take any job you can. Today we were on a trip to a small town up north from our previous destination. My eyes strayed to the back of the cart to check on my sister, Tora, who was lazily sprawled across a pile of hay,her brown curls covered her face as she lay, sound asleep. I turned my attention back to the road, and flinched when two small hands rapped themselves around my neck and practically flushing the air from my lungs.
"Are we their yet?" Tora yawned, which only seemed to tighten her grasp on me".....Uhh..Shizuka..are you ok?"

"A-Air " I rasped, the girl might be small but she had the strength of a Bear.

"Ohh.. right"she replied, quickly uncoiling her arms from my neck " So are we there yet?"

"Nope"

"We're going the right way, right?"she asked, her eyes reflexively side to side to make sure.

"Yes"i replied, my hands instinctivly keeping the rains from slipping through my fingers.

"Everything is going to be ok and nothing bad will ever happen ,right?" Her normally optimistic voice now seemed bitter, she buried her chin in my chestnut brown hair. Even though I wasn't looking at her, I could feel her huge brown eyes on me, pleading for a answer.

I stiffened at the thought, and quickly pushing it away, determined to not let sara see my uneasiness. And let out a weary smile "Don't worry, I will protect you with my life". Her eyes lit up and she once again bared her optimistic smile.

That was the last thing I said to her before it happened. All I could see was the thick smog and icy black flames that had surrounded us, the sickening snappes of wood as the fire licked hungrily at the cart. The feeling of  fire bursting ,pushing me far of the cart. Yell and shouts erupted as Tora screaming for help, mixed in was a almost demonic laughter. Its red eyes burned into me as it dragged her away. While I laid their, wounds too deep to even lift a finger. It wasn't till after the flames had subsided that their was finally silence. I noticed the two lime green eyes emerge from the darkness of the trees, i could only think of one word,'wolf'. I knew that my misery would soon be at an end, the beast had come for easy prey. The animal raised its head and drew closer, it's glistening white fur almost seemed like shard of ice in the moon pale light. It eyes stared coldly into mine, shining like green emeralds. My vision slightly blurred and everything started going black around me, all except the wolfs emerald eyes. Death had finally come for me.
'Sorry... Tora'

My eyes burst open as i lurched forward, I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. I let out a shaky breath, and my nerves started to settle down.
'Another nightmare'
I stretched out my arms, my mind didn't really wake up until i was hit with a hard pang of discomfort. I realized my back was leaning against something thick and prickly. I looked down to see that I had fallen asleep in a tree, again. I took a quick glance at my surroundings, i could see the morning sun rising above Mt.Fuji in the distance. The sakura trees were in bloom and there was petals seem to scatter in the wind. I stood up, slowly dusting off my black pants, and made my way down the tree. Droping from branch to branch as i had done thousands of times before. I dropped to the green forest floor, barely making a sound in the thick grass.

I reached drew my hand back twards a pouch on the right side of my belt, i untying the noose and pulling out a wrinkled map. I had received it in a village bordering this forrest, from the chief himself. The man had seemed almost desperate for me to take the job. The parchment was yellow with age, hinting that many people have gazed upon the map before. I had been specifically hired to bring in a cat demon who was stealing food and slaughtering villagers in its wake. I had already studied the sighting reports and tracked it to this area.

Crunch....SNAP

I instantly turned, my black katana already drawn reveling thin silver symbols stretched across the magnificent blade. A small figure moved noisily behind the vegitation, it slowly stepped into the clearing. My sword awaited the moment that i would get a clear shot.
The head of a rabbit appeared outside the vegetation and shot in the other direction.
I face-palmed, it was just a damn RABBIT!
'Damit, i really am losing it'
I stood silent as a faint sense of tension filled the air, i was being watched. I briefly glanced up at the trees, i could see there was something their that wasn't right. It was just the question of where this stalker was hidden. I spotted a overly covered spot on the midsection of a nearby tree, i could tell that a figure was crouching on a branch behind it.
I could hear the the stockers heartbeat quickened dramatically,it knew i could see it.
I dashed to the towards the tree, the figure fled, it was fast but not faster then me! I leapt through the trees, going from branch to branch, slowly gaining on the mystery figure. From above i could see the person clearly, it seemed to be a female. She wore a long white kimono, her hair velvet red. Lastly i spotted two orange cat ears and a striped tail.
'Cat demon'
I unsheathed my katana, aimed for the demons heart, and leaped forward. Gravity sent my swooping down at a perfect angle. Their was no doubt about it, this was going to be another one shot kill. My small sense of pride was shattered as i felt a noose tighten itself around my ankle. I felt my self being tugged backwards, my blade missing its target, cutting her shoulder instead. I felt my self sway unsteadily as i tried to piece together what exactly just happened. I was be suspended 30 feet in the air by a amateur demon snarl . My katana had landed in front of me on the ground, right out of reach.
I , one if the worlds best demon hunters, had been caught in an armature TRAP? It was disgraceful for me to be fooled by such a simple thing. I watched as the cat-demon disappeared into the distance, while i was stuck hanging from a stupid TREE!

What do you think. Please tell me how i did!
