I thrashed around wildly. How can he do this to me? His fiancee! I was gasping for air, hoping Vanessa would feel my movement , or that someone will hear my effort to stay alive, and come to my aid. The more I struggled, the harder he pressed the pillow into me, restricting my airways. I was beginning to feel myself slipping. How could I have been so stupid? I only met him recently and I entrusted him blindly.
I began to recall my childhood, and how happy I was, especially when I was with both of my parents.
"Momeee!" I yelled, excited to see my mom come home. My father greeted her with a kiss. I was bothered by it, although my 5 year old eyes should have cringed at the sight of my parent's affection.
"So, who's telling Colleen, you or me?" My father asked my mother. I looked in between them. What could they possibly be talking about?
"Rock paper scissors for it?" My mother asked my father. My father chuckled at her and my father won. My mom made a mistake into challenging him.
"So," my father said as he sat down on the couch, and he sat me on his lap," Mom and I have decided to take you to the market to see the new fruits this season."
Are they kidding me!? I loved going to the market because they gave out a ton of free samples, and I would get full on them. I especially loved being by the fresh fruit section. I loved fruits but I hateeedd vegetables. They were Earth's design to make children suffer.
"Go get ready sweetie, we will wait for you and then we'll leave." My mom said in her most angelic voice. She has the face of an angel. My father also had an angelic face. They were meant to be.
I quickly got dressed in my favorite, dusty pink sun dress and headed to get my shoes that were white with pink ribbons. Today was going to be a great day.
I slipped back to consciousness as I felt the air rush into my lungs. I blinked a few times so my eyes could adjust to the light in the room. The lights were and and Collin's uncle had him crushed up against the wall, holding him by the scruff of the neck. His wife was next to me, holding my hands. She had a worried, and wary expression on her face, and I couldn't help but feel sorry for her.
Collin's uncle began shouting at him. "What's wrong with you! You almost killed her? I thought you loved her!"
"I do love her! She just.. she just angers me!"
"Well you sure as hell have a weird way of showing your love. I need to start watching my back now too. And she doesn't anger you, you just have no patience and it doesn't help that your a drunk!"
Collin's eyes grew dark and dangerous. "Stay out of my way!" With that, he shoved his uncle off of him and stalked away to his room, and slammed the door. I yelped at the loud bang and I felt Vanessa stiffen next to me. "What a monster. That alcohol is really turning him into something he isn't."
Yeah.. No kidding.
Vanessa turned to me and saw me worn out. "Oh child, you look pale. Here, try to get some sleep." She turned off the lamp of the room.
I spent the rest of the night tossing and turning, I annoyed Vanessa so much she kicked me a few times. When I finally fell asleep, I was welcomed by my thoughts. What had I done to deserve this? I was always a good girl, I helped my parents out a lot, I was always cheerful, and I was always the optimist in a group of people. But now I'm struggling to find where that girl had gone. Why me god? I began to think of how much I missed my parents. Why did they have to go?

"I know, I hear she got into a fight because her drug dealer thought she jacked him." I heard some of the girls at work talking, they were literally a few feet away and their attempts at whispering weren't good.
