Harper's Pov
After giving a tour of the school to Harry, and organizing his locker it was time for lunch. "Do you mind if I sit with you?" I looked up from my book to see Harry holding a lunch tray.
"No, I don't mind at all." I smiled and patted next to me. I almost always sit outside under a big oak tree, besides during the winter.
I closed my book and smiled, "So what brought you to America?" I took a bite out of my apple.
He sighed, his face turning from a smile to a frown.
"Everything alright?" I asked.
"Yeah, yeah. I'm good." He looked up giving me a crooked smile. "My umm...parents wanted me to stay here with my Gran for the year...Just to try something different." He shifted around on the grass awkwardly.
"All the way to the US to try something different?" I asked.
"Yeah...I just didn't like my school and my mum suggested staying here with my Gran." He took a drink of his juice.
"Oh..." I paused, many questions circling around my mind but I decided to ignore them and change the subject. "Do you have any siblings?"
"Yeah, I have an older sister, Gemma. She's at Uni." He informed me.
"So she stayed behind in England?" I asked.
"Mhm," He took a bite of his lunch before speaking again. "Enough of me, what about you?"
"What do you want to know?" This was weird. Someone actually wanting to know about me. Somebody interested in talking to me.
"Anything."
"Well, I'm eighteen. I used to live in Colorado, but when I was fourteen my parents got a divorce. So, my little brother, Braydon, my Mom and I moved to Santa Rosa to start a new life."
"I'm sorry," He seemed to actually be interested.
"Don't be...It was for the best." I smiled telling the truth. "Well, we better get going. We have to go pick up your textbooks in the office." I threw my trash away in the bin and gathered my things.
He stood up as well, "So where do you live?"
"I actually live right on Santa Rosa beach. 422 to be exact." I giggled. "What about you?" We walked towards the office.
"That's crazy because my Gran lives on the beach too! We're 433. " His face lit up.
"Awesome! Maybe we can meet up one morning at the cafe and walk together to school." I suggested.
"That'd be nice." He grinned.
*****
After a long day of going over procedures, touring the whole school and whatnot, I was ready to go dance. It was nice to finally make a friend. Harry seemed like a really nice, sweet guy.
I was walking to my locker when all of the sudden I felt my knee give out making me lose my balance. I went tumbling down, my face hitting the cemented ground. My books went flying across the hall, skidding across the floor.
It wasn't a fall you could just bounce right back out of either. It was one where you slowly got back up hoping no one saw you. But everyone did, I watched as people laughed and mocked me.
I felt tears brimming my eyes and I couldn't hold it back anymore. A tear fell, then another down my cheek. I started grabbing my books when I felt someone's hand brush against mine.
I looked up to see Harry helping me grab my textbooks and notebooks. "Are you okay?" He asked me.
"I'm fine." I quickly wiped a tear away before shoving my books in my locker and grabbing my bag. I headed down stairs to the front door and pushed it open.
I stepped out onto the sidewalk letting the humid air hit my face. Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath before opening my eyes again. I'm so glad it was Friday. Mom had to work the weekend, but I would manage to work around the house doing little things for her. I'd have Braydon help as well.
"Hey!" I heard someone running and footsteps coming closer. I turned around to see Harry catching up with me.
"Hi," I said bluntly, staring out at the city.
"I'm sorry about what happened earlier..." He scratched the back of his neck.
"It's alright, I'm used to it." I began walking away from the school.
He sighed following me, "Do you mind if I walk home with you? Seeing how we live close anyhow." He changed the subject.
"I uh...I actually wasn't heading straight-" I paused for a moment, thoughts running through my mind. He needs to know his way around town. But I want to go dance badly. He's a big boy, he can find his way around town.
"Do you know what? That sound wonderful." My mouth contradicted with my thoughts, but I went with it anyways.
"Good, because I have no clue how to get to my Gran's home from here." He laughed.
I couldn't help but giggle, "Well, it's a good thing I'm here isn't it?" I playfully nudged his shoulder.
"Yeah...it is." He smiled, showing his dimples.
