"There’s lights that line these halls… that beckon us to stay...”

I stepped farther into the office and took a seat on the closer of the two which was vacant. The smirk on this guy’s face was confusing. It drove me insane how he looked like he knew me SO well yet he was just a stranger in the seat next to me.

"So anyway Lacey!" Mrs. Tiller interrupted my deep thought process and I snapped up, feeling ashamed cause I was almost staring right through this guy. "This is Rhyet Thompson, I just thought you'd be great to show him around the school."

She gave me an oh so obvious wink. Mrs. Tiller obviously thought this guy was pretty hot, which I guess he was, but whatever. I wasn’t Ms. Popular but I was pretty and I could date just about any guy in the school if I wanted, but I didn’t.

"Call me Ry." he smiled and it was something magnificent...like it could light up a whole room... My god I was a creep… I thought I didn’t want him…  I didn’t  I told myself.

"Of course!" Mrs. Tiller smiled back, "But  you guys should get going! Don't want to miss too many classes missy." she pointed at me jokingly and slid his schedule, a map of the school and some other papers across her desk to him.

"Thanks" he grinned

We walked out of the office in complete silence until we reached the ghostly hallway.

"Ry." he stopped in the middle of the hall and reached his hand out towards me.

“Lacey Dameon” I returned the gesture and shook his hand which was very steady and in an odd way, assuring.

“So, you always lived around here?” he asked casually, then started walking down the hall again. I felt like even though he had asked the question, he was just making conversation… almost like he knew the answer… This was really going to bug me.

“Um, ya… Always” I added awkwardly and he nodded back “Here’s your locker.”

I veered him off to the side of the hall where his locker was, conveniently, only a small distance away from mine. Ry shuffled through the papers in his hand until he found his schedule which had his locker code  scribbled on the bottom right corner and passed it to me.

Grabbing the papers from behind my back where he stood, I started twisting the lock. When I couldn’t get it the first three try’s, I started cursing.

“Fuck.” I muttered under my breath

“Here, let me.” Ry gently scooted me over and took hold of the lock, it clicked open first try. “See.” He grinned and opened it with a chuckle.

“So, where are you from?” I decided to make conversation while he kept himself busy checking out his new locker.

Ry’s face dropped for a second, but he caught it quick and said “Illinois.”

“Oh, that’s kinda far.” I didn’t understand his expression before he answered but I decided I’d pretend I didn’t notice and keep interrogating him, “Why’d you move?”

“Dad had a job transfer.” He answered quickly

“Hmm, seems like everyone’s moving up here now. Guessing he works in the oil?” I assumed.

“Uh ya...oil” he replied but didn’t make eye contact.

“Ya” I awkwardly added while he arranged his books in his locker.

Something about this kid confused me. He looked pretty average from the outside… but there was definitely something different about him.

I watched him put his books away in his locker and mutter how stupid each subject was as he quickly flipped through the text books. While flipping through the math book he turned to me,
