Spanish or Something More?

"Evelyn, wake up."

I blinked away the blurriness of my eyes and groaned. I rubbed my sleepiness out of my eyes, my dream long forgotten. When I looked over at my alarm clock I groaned even more, I had slept in.

"Just great" I mumbled to myself.

I quickly hopped around my room pulling on jeans and a t shirt. After running a brush through my tangled hair and putting on some mascara, I ran down the stairs, shouting my mothers name. She didn't answer but a note on the countertop told me she had gone to take Telphy to her doctor's appointment and that I would have to walk to school today.

When I deemed myself ready for school I grabbed a granola bar and ran outside, I didn't have time to wait for a bus. While I ran, I shoved ear buds into my ears and music blasted through. When I got to school, I stopped at my locker quickly before walking to my history class. My feet on the tiles echoed throughout the empty hall. As I opened up the door, I quickly realized three things.

One, it was the wrong class.

Two, Quinn and a bunch of older high-schoolers were all staring at me.

Three, I had to pee REALLY badly.

I cleared my throat awkwardly at the class and mumbled a sorry. Everyone else turned back to what they were doing as I left the room. As I walked down the hall I tried to remember what class I was supposed to be in.

"Evelyn, wait up!"

I turned around to find Quinn closing the door of his classroom and jogging over to me. When he stopped nearly a foot away from me, I found trouble in remembering to breath.

He exhaled a breathy, "hey" before starting to walk down the hallway with me. An uncomfortable silence soon hung between us.

"Um so Evelyn, you take Spanish right?" He asked, breaking the silence.

I nodded then notice she wasn't looking at me but at the ground so I said a quick yes.

"How long have you been taking Spanish?"

I frowned confused, "Four years"

I watched as a huge smile grew on his face and he looked over at me.

"Okay, well I'm falling behind in my class so could you maybe help me? This is only my second year taking Spanish and I don't want to already fail." He stopped and looked over at me.

I took a moment a moment to answer which he saw as hesitation. A small crease appeared in between his two eye brows and I had a sudden urge to smooth it out. A strand of brown hair fell into those brown, puppy-dog eyes and I knew I couldn't say no.

"Okay."

He let out a breath of relief and emotions flashed behind his eyes as he took a step toward me and hugged me.

His strong arms wrapped around my back and trapped my arms to their sides so I couldn't hug him back. We stayed like that for a few more minutes until the bell rang and I was pulled into the real world, remembering I had missed yet another class. He pulled away as people started to file into the hallway.

"Thank you, Evelyn. I'll text you my address later."

We were swallowed up into the crowd before I could even tell him he didn't have my number.
