"So you're back in Texas?" Peyton says. "When did that happen?"

"My dad changed jobs. He knew I wanted to come back. I never liked it in North Carolina. There isn't as much cheer out there. And when we were planning the move to Texas, our family thought, why not go back to the same exact town, where we know everyone? I could even come back to Cheer Athletics. So here we are!"

Alison's voice is low and husky, surprising for a girl so small. But the unexpectedness of it, I have to admit, makes it cool somehow. It reminds me of Emma Stone.

"That's awesome," Peyton says. "Wow. I'm so glad you're back."

I flip through my mental knowledge of Peyton. I thought I knew everything about her. We became friends when I first joined Cheer Athletics in fourth grade, so obviously I know everything about her that's happened since then. We had filled each other in on our histories, about all of our friends we'd ever had in her life. I knew that in elementary school Peyton had been friends with girls named Sarah, Angela, and Brittney. And since then our friends had been Reagan, Jessica, Ashley, Tina, Katie, and sometimes Carly.

Never, not once, had Peyton mentioned a girl named Alison.

"Oh, I guess I should probably introduce you guys," Peyton says. "Alison, this is Jamie."

Um, shouldn't she introduce her tome first?"

"Jamie, this is Alison."

"Oh, nice to meet you," Alison says absently, her eyes skimming over me like I'm not worth noticing.

I nod slightly, unwilling to say the same.
