When I woke up, it was ten till eleven. I sat up, and decided to sketch. I drew many pictures of Chris, and Mia. I hung them up on my wall, and was deciding what to wear. By this time, it was about twelve. I put on a red and blue stripped ringer T and some light washed jeans. I pulled on my old converse and went downstairs. There was a note on the counter.
Dez,
Me and your father are out looking for jobs. We'll be back before dinner.
Love, momI crumpled up the note and threw it away. I leaned over the counter and looked at the time. It was twelve twenty. I grabbed an apple and walked to the radio, and turned it on. I sat down in a chair while I ate. When I was done, I decided I would get there early, so I started to walk.
I walked around my neighborhood for a little while, and then I started to walk to the diner. I could see that there were a lot of people there. I walked into the diner and looked around. Chris wasn't there, it was probably just nearing one. I did get there early. I took a seat in a booth and looked at the time: it was twelve fifty six.
"What can I get for you?" I didn't even notice the waitress was standing there.
"Oh can I get a Coke?" She wrote down my order and looked up.
"Will that be all?" I was about to say yes when someone else spoke from behind me, causing me to smile.
"Make that two Cokes, please."
I spun around and saw chris standing right behind me. He smiled and winked at me. The waitress smiled.
"Two Cokes, coming right up," and she walked away.
"So, where do you want to check out first?" He asked as he slid in the booth seat across from me.
"I don't know...surprise me," I ended up saying. He smiled.
"I know just the place," he said just as the waitress gave us our Cokes. She smiled and walked away.
After finishing our Cokes, he paid and we left. He almost forced me not to pay. He took me down a street, past a dead end sign, and into a field with a tree and a worn out tree house. I walked up to it and looked back at Chris.
"Go ahead," he said politly. I climbed up the latter.
"Just knock." And I did as Chris told me.
"Thats not the secret knock," I heard someone yell up from above.
"Its me," Chris said.
"What? You never forget the secret knock," I heard a loud scrape on the floor, and then a shaggy haired blonde kid with huge black rimmed glasses opened up the latch.
"Who's this?" The kid said looking at Chris, then back at me.
"I'll tell you once you let us up," Chris yelled up to him.
"Jesus Christ, did he really have to bring a girl?" I heard him mumble under his breath. The glasses kid reluctantly moved, and I climbed up through the hatch and sat down in a chair. Chris came up soon after.
"So...who is she?" The glasses kid asked again. I looked around. There was one other kid in the tree house, and he was reading a magazine.
"This is Dezarae. She's new in town so I'm showing her around," Chris said back.
"Are you sure that's all you want to do?" The glasses kid said back. He started to 'laugh', at least that's what I think he was doing.
I looked over at Chris. His cheeks turned a light shade of pink, but he just rolled his eyes. I felt my cheeks starting to burn. I was too embarrassed to notice the kid with the magazine leaned in close to me.
"As you can see, this pile of shit is Teddy." He smiled and I smiled back.
"I'm Goredon. Call me Gordie." He grabbed my hand and shook it up and down.
Chris came and scooted closer to me.
"Sorry about Teddy. He's kinda an ass hole sometimes but he's just a little crazy once you get to know him," he whispered inside my ear.
"I'm right here, I'm not def." Gordie widened his eyes that were still locked onto his magazine. "Whatever you say, man." Chris snickered at his remark. After he said this, we heard another knock coming from down below.
"That's not the secret nock," Goredon yelled.
"Whatever just let me in," a whine replied.
"Vern," they all said in sync. They moved a table out of the way and lifted up the door.
"How's it goin' Verno?" Teddy asked. He pulled out a deck of cards.
"Good," The kid named Vern said as he sat down. He then noticed my presence.
"Who's this?" He almost asked in disgust.
Teddy laughed.
"It's Chris's girlfriend," he said, emphasizing the girl. I flushed red once more.
"Shut it Teddy, I'm just showing her around town," Chris sounded annoyed. I looked at Vern.
"I'm Dezarae. Call me Dez." I stuck my hand out and he took my greeting and shook it.
"I'm Vern but sometimes the guys call me Verno."
He was kind of chubby and he looked actually kinda adorable.
Teddy started to deal cards.
"Wanna play?" He asked with a cigarette in his mouth.
"What are you playing?" I asked back. Chris picked up his deck.
"21," He replied. I looked at Vern who started to lean on the table.
"What's that?" I asked. I probably should have just said I didn't want to play.
"What?" Teddy looked at me as if I insulted him.
"Have you been living under a rock your whole life?" He answered back in disgust.
"Um..I..," Chris cut me off.
"It's ok. I'll teach you," He said in a comforting tone. Teddy leaned back in his chair and sighed a whatever sigh.
In a couple minutes, I got the hang of it and I even beat the guys a couple of times. After a while, I started getting a little bored.
"What time is it?" I asked. Gordie held his arm up to his face.
"Quarter after three," he replied. Chris looked up from his cards.
"Shit, I better show you around a little faster."
I laughed and put my cards on the table. And Chris did the same. Teddy picked them up and moved the table.
"Nice meeting you guys," I said as I slipped through the door.
"See ya," Goredon said. Teddy just snorted rather rudely. I climbed down the ladder and waited for Chris.
"Where to next?" I asked as he stood across from me.
"I'll just show you around town," he said.
He showed me where the view was and where all of the good stores were. By the time we were done with that, he took me up to this very pretty spot and we watched the sun as it started to sink behind the mountains. I love the sunset, especially the sunrise. .
"Shit, I better be getting home," I said, "My parents will be worried."
Chris looked up at me.
"Can I walk you home?" He asked.
"Sure," I said and I started to smile. We got up and started walking towards my neighborhood.
"So, how do you like the guys?" He asked.
"They're pretty cool, but Teddy can be pretty obnoxious it seems like," I replied and Chris started to laugh.
"So you've noticed," he said. We walked through town and made it to my house. As I walked up my steps, Chris said goodbye.
"Bye," I smiled and waved. By this time it was almost dark and my parents car was in the driveway. I opened the door and closed it behind me, still smiling.
"Where have you been all day?" My mother sounded furious.
"I met some new kids and one of them showed me around," I said.
"We have been waiting for you. Have you eaten at all today?" I hadn't even noticed how hungry I was until just now.
"Not really.." I said as I looked down at the floor.
"Well you can eat dinner in your room. The place you will be staying until we get home tomorrow," My dad walked in and crossed his arms. I was opened my mouth to protest, but my dad cut me off.
"Do you have any idea of how worried we were? We have been waiting for you for almost two hours and you didn't even call or leave a note to say where or how long you were going out for," he almost yelled and I felt really bad for them.
"I'm sorry," I almost whispered.
"Sorry doesn't change anything. Now grab your dinner and go to your room," my mom practically threw my dinner plate into my hands. I walked upstairs and closed my door. Some people would think I would cry. But I don't cry much. At least not as much as I used to. The only thing that really got to me were the headaches I used to get.
I leaned up against my wall and ate. After I finished, I changed and went to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I then curled up in my comforter and slept. I dreamed of Chris.
