It was 6:30 p.m, and it was freezing out.
Delilah stayed after school in the library, and she just finished her work.
The sky was so dark, there were small stars scattered across it.
The parking lot was empty, except for a silver truck sat at the very front of the school.
Her breath caught in her throat.

Come on, Delilah. Go say hi.

She started biting her nails, a habit she had attainted a long time ago.

I can't.
I have to.

She took short, slow, cautious steps towards the truck. It was so dark out that it appeared black, but when the light hit it you could tell it was silver.
Right when she was almost to the truck, she turned around quickly and started walking home.

I can't, I couldn't.

She shoved her earphones into her ears and hummed quietly while she walked out of the school's parking lot.

Delilah felt something on her shoulder, and took one earphone off.
"What?" a voice whispered, she turned around.
"Huh?" Delilah asked,
until she realized that Luke was 3 feet away from her, his eyebrows furrowed and eyes curious and seeking adventure.

I can't give you adventure, she thought.

"You walked to my car?" He asked,
his voice sounded so nice.
it was deep and steady and he could put her right to sleep.
but she would prefer to be awake, because this was a big achievement.
"Nah." She said, avoiding eye contact.
His eyes were light and dark, all at once.
He scoffed. "Pretty sure you walked to my car."
"Pretty sure you're delusional." Delilah responded.
it was so silent, you couldn't hear anything.
Her breathing became ragged and rushed, like she was at a loss for air.

his became rushed, too.

Luke grabbed his light hair, "I'm not crazy." he whispered.
his voice was so silent, but to her it was so loud.

"Oh." she said.

Oh. oh oh oh, oh god. oh lord. oh meant many things, oh meant disappointment and excitment and realization and consideration and it just meant, oh.

"Oh." he responded.
it was silent again. he stared at her.
Delilah squirmed,
did he think I was weird?
yeah, yeah he did.

"Do you need a ride, Delilah?" He asked politely, and he stared straight at her.
like he could see everything,
like he could see her excitment, and her anxiety, and her astonishment, and the fact that her heart was practically melting.
he was so mesmerizing that she didn't even acknowledge the fact that he knew her name.

"Okay." Delilah told him, okay. I'll get into your silver Honda that has been sitting outside this school for 2 years straight. okay, I'll do it.

"Cool." he said.

Yeah, cool.
