Early Fall

I watched as the gentle waves collapsed over the sand, my feet stepping at a slow comfortable rhythm. The sign we pass says: Shades Beach - boat launch. The OLM church bell bellows nearby for the seventh time as the sun is settling nicely into its watery slumber.

"So your dad only likes ultimate cage fighting after eleven at night?"

"That's what it seems like." I confirm, laughing uncontrollably. She squeezes my hand and I squeeze back.

"Your dad seems like a funny guy." Elizabeth concludes as we glance at one another. The light of the dying sun transform her eyes into a sunburst of color, and the gentle breeze shifts her hair in a way that resembles a Greek goddess.

On we went, hand in hand, as if walking through a dream...

...wait a minute...

...god dammit...

...I knew it...

My eyes flew open, immediately greeted by blue sky and... leaves?Normally, I don't like taking naps. The second my eyes regained focus, I trained them on my surroundings.

Ah, I remember now. To my right, my dream-state companion lay, her eyes barely open, gazing up at the clouds. Her locks of sunshine cascaded over her shoulders.

We lay there side by side, in the customary hands-under-the-head position. The breeze was the same, moving the grass so that it tickled our faces.

I roll my head to the side, catching her attention. Our eyes meet, in the mortal world this time and she smiles. I smile too and return my head to its resting position.

"See that cloud right there?" She points up to the heavens.

"Yeah?"

"Doesn't it look like one of those old fashioned alarm clocks?"

Immediately I saw the reference. "That's genius, you're a genius." I conclude.

What a beautiful day... I sit up slightly, leaning back in my elbows and stare out over the great expanse laid out before us.

It was early fall, leaves littering the ground like colored pencil shavings. Our resting place resided at the peak of a hillside, overlooking the surrounding land: multicolored forest and rolling green meadows. I almost couldn't remember how we got there.

"This is amazing," I say, almost to test my vocal cords.

"It's beautiful," Liz replies.

"You're beautiful." I say almost instantly.

"Why, thank you," she laughs.

It still felt like I was dreaming...

I feel something bump my hand. It's hers. I release my hand from behind my head and let my fingers interlock with hers as our arms fall to the grass.

Definitely not dreaming
